Unless you have some documentation to back that up, then it's worth only as much as any other cymbal of it's size, type, and era.

Past ownership means basically nothing to most collectors. Perhaps if he had signed the cymbal and had a picture of him giving it to your dad then there would be some extra value.

It's a nice story, and nobody doubts that your dad got it from Gene. That's pretty cool, actually.

....but, yeah, when one tries to sell it w/ a claim such as that, there needs to be some documentation to actually support its value.

An old 12" Zenjian, in good shape and a nice weight, is worth maybe $80 tops. The same cymbal with some sort of verified paper trail to Gene would be worth over $300....

Thats prettty much what I thought (although I don't know how a loc of elvis's hair went on e bay for 15K) I bet its a clump of hair from some who knows who, its worth more to my family anyway. My dad was a drummer and took lessons from Roy Knap in chicago, Roy was close firends with Gene, and my dad met him on several occassions when he was in town with his band, I think they maqde a connection because our last name is KOUBA which sounds kind of like Krupa...........I wish I had my dads 1930 Ludwig set, have no idea what happened to that set. Of course I wish I also had my 1969 chevelle also, you never know what you have till its gone and 50 years go by LOL!!!!

Maybe the Luddy kit is in the Chevelle somewhere....?

Kouba....that's great...that would'a been hilarious if your dad had had to sub for Gene here and there. Can you imagine the club owner ?

"No, we didn't say we had Krupa tonight...we said we have Kouba ! "

That's a pretty cool bit of history, though...

Kouba sounds slavic as well as Krupa. I heard that Gene Krupa had Polish OR Czech origins (this confusion might be because in 19th century, Czechs and some Poles lived under one crown's rule). Do you know where your ancestors came from?

Sorry for bumping old thread.
