Geez, how did I not figure this out before & general drum updates Last viewed: 2 seconds ago

Hey all,

Still loving my first drum kit, my 70 DownBeat. Anyway, my tom always looked higher than Ringo's, and I couldn't figure out how he got his so low. Finally it dawned on me, and I flipped one of the pieces around from "12 oclock" to "6 oclock". Must have lowered it 1.75-2 inches. Much easier to play now.

I rigged an overhead mic to the cheapy boom stand that came with my kit, and I have another mounted with office clips and a rubber band (HIGH tech :) ) to the leg of that same stand to mic my bass. I dump them through a mixing board into independent channels on my computer so I can mix and eq the overall drums and the bass separately. Ill try posted a clip sometime. Since I am primary a guitarist, I can play all the parts now on a few simpler drum songs and set them to "tape". I have a non-linear 8 track setup on my computer. Been working on "Get Off My Cloud" by the Stones, really fun drum line there.

Thanks again for everyones help before.

You know, sometimes it the simple solutions that elude us the most. We usually try to find a more complicated answer.

ha, that's great. :) I think some of the height woes I had with that tom have to do with the throne I am using, its a late 60s (early 70s) Ludwig Atlas that is original to the kit. It doesn't have height adjustment and is uncomfortable as hell.

I am really impressed with how simple the rail design is, but how incredibly flexible it is in terms of adjustments available. You can pretty much get it where you want it to go.

SOT: About that "uncomfortable as hell" throne. You should change that, today. The reason being is that you'll wind up with back problems, or worse. Like, chronic inflammation of the tailbone (and you don't want to have that, trust me). I used, for years, first, a Ludwig throne with the diamond-shaped seat (forget what they call it), and then later a vintage Slingerland seat covered in white pearl-like vinyl. The most uncomfortable thing I have ever sat on, bar none - and I used it for years, unfortunately. A piece of wood covered in one inch of cheap foam, now aged. Big mistake. Had to give up playing for a period of time since I could not sit behind my drums for more than 15 minutes. It finally went away, helped in no small part to a $100 DW drum throne. Best investment I have ever made, in terms of comfort behind the drums.

I think consolettes like this are incredibly versatile, and yet I see drummers who play them and yet can't stand them. I'd love to find an older kit (like I need another one!) that had one.

THanks RIck.

Yeah, I would like to go modern, but I have expensive tastes when it comes to thrones. The drummer in my band always had a saddle (?) style one with a backrest. It was like a couch. :)

Would be fun to get one of these, except for the price....

Maybe I will just find another one like my current one that is poor shape, and I could strip the seat and redo it with modern foam etc. That would keep the vintage look wchich I would like to do....

You can get a saddle throne just like the Ludwig for $40 from Grizzly Industries. They are as nice as anything out there.

I have 2 of them and the seat will fit on many other type throne stands. I use my saddle seat on a Tama throne stand because it folds up small and fits in my small trap case. http://www.grizzly.com/outlet/Guitar-Drummer-s-Stool/H5965
