I love this - This guy tears it up & rocks out in professional pop sensibilty kinda way ( i can't tell what he is banging on tho, luddies?).

A great live performance all around IMO, I love Flo & Eddie.

not Ludwigs. I am not sure what they are. It actually kinda looks like a MIJ set to me

Hi,

That is Johnny Barbata, one of the greats who never gets enough press. Amazing career. Replaced Dallas Taylor in CSNY, Kenny Buttrey with Neil Young, he's all over the place.

I believe he is playing Rogers. The fittings look right and the configuration matches this pic of him, down to the hi hat in the centre of the kick.

The bass drum in the vid clip has both the turtles logo and the JB on the front head.

I wouldn't expect Barbata and the boys to show up for a tv gig at that point with firewood.

To the main point though. It is a terrific performance by both the singers and the drummer. Terrific rock and roll drumming in the Hal Blaine tradition!

Thanks,

Patrick

Well, if it is a Rogers kit, then what finish is that? It looks like a blue tiger's eye or something. It doesn't look like blue onyx or any of the Rogers finishes I have ever seen. I thought Rogers at first, too...but that finish threw me off.

O-Lugs, I am only guessing based on the black and white pic of the Rogers kit and how pretty much everybody at that time and level of success showed up on tv with pro gear.

Here's a link to a different performance with the same kit:

I see Rogers, some see MIJ. I dunno. Barbata is still around, if anybody knows to ask.

Terrific drummer (did I say that twice?)

Thanks for the info Patrick!

I play in a 60's mod/brit invasion/garage quasi tribute band and have been listening to a lot of mid 60's pop drummers like Jim McCarty with The Yardbirds & Bobby Elliott with The Hollies for example (although neither are the studio ace type like Barbata).

I am a big Neil fan and love Time Fades Away - probably been hearing Johnny for years with no clue...DOH.

Here is a cool interview i came across, but no mention of his kits: (though he actually co-wrote Elenore)
