G'day from New Zealand

Hi

I came across this site via a search I made looking for information about a couple of old Ludwig bass drums that I own.

I recently restored them both to their as new condition as far as I could, given the usual wear on hoops, skins, etc.

The first is a Leedy and ludwig (I think) 27 inch which I recently sold to defray costs. The second is a 24 inch Ludwig. Both shells are of Mahogany with maple hoops.

The tension rods are independent, nickel plated. I found a sticker inside the shell of both drums. The 24 inch drum is a Ludwig & Ludwig Aero Kraft with the makers signature SCY ? and date 6 11 30.

The 27 inch drum had a Super Tone label with the name of an Auckland, New Zealand distributor the date on that one is 1935.

There are images of both drums on my music blog http://harmensmusicblog.blogspot.com/

I'd be interested in your thoughts.

Cheers

G'day. Welcome. I just got a book a few weeks back on the Ludwig drums and the company. It was very cool and talked a lot about some of the drums you have. I would suggest it for your collection. I got mine on eBay.

welcome to the forum, sounds like you had single tension models.Rob Cooks ludwig book is a great read and good reference,Ludwig marketed the aerocraft shells as being Hi tech, one of the managers was a pilot in WW one,and he took a bunch of shells up in a plane and dropped them,he knew that they would catch air and have good chance of surviving, which they did.

Hi

Thanks for your messages re the vintage Ludwig drums in my collection.

I've just been gifted a very old bass drum pedal from around the same era (or perhaps even earlier) See images at http://harmensmusicblog.blogspot.com/. Interesting how these things get magnetised to each other over time.

It is a Fraser Patented pedal with what looks like a Ludwig style foot plate. It's quite repairable so I should get the job done over the next couple of months. I'll be interested to see how it performs. I currently have a vintage Japanese copy of a speed king style pedal (unbranded) on my bass drum set up which I recently refurbished with new bearings and a rebuilt base plate which now works like new.

Most recently I found an old 1980's Meinl 16 inch, medium crash cymbal on our local Trade Me website for a bargain price. It took a polish and it's back to like new, it plays and sounds really nicely, a nice dark, glassy crash / ride.
