Last June I purchased a vintage-style 3 point strainer from DrumsandSome
for a 6-1/2 x 14 Slingerland bronze shell I was building. Initially, I was
impressed with its design and build quality and said as much on this forum.
I chose it for the vintage vibe over a period correct Slingerland Zoomatic.
This was kind of a big decision since I had to drill the shell for whichever
one I chose and the bolt patterns are dissimilar. I hate extra holes is a drum
so I'm stuck forever with whichever I chose.
Fast forward a couple of months; after very little use, the pivot post that the
strainer arm pivots on pulled out of the main bracket, leaving the strainer
(and the snare) inoperable. This happened at rehearsal rather than a gig
so it wasn't a total loss (luckily, I had another snare with me). The offending
rivet disappeared among the drums, cables, etc. never to be seen again.
The problem seems to be that the pivot (kind of a long rivet) is a press fit
and is not peened over on the back side (see the pivot in a Ludwig P-85 to see
what I'm talking about). Through continued use, it appears the post could loosen
and this may be a problem area in the future for more of these.
I was able to fix this with a shortened 5mm pan head cap screw and a
Nylock nut in place of where the pivot was. If you have a snare with this
throw off, consider this fix so you avoid a potential failure when you can
least afford it.
After this 'update', I'm hopeful that the strainer will perform properly
without further problems.
BTW, I did notify DrumsandSome about this. They asked for pictures (sent)
and they promised to ship a replacement. After several additional emails
asking for an update, I've not received it - pretty disappointed with the
customer service. On the other hand, this was less than $50.00 shipped, so
it's not like I'm out a huge sum of money - just my time to fix it really.
Hope this is helpful to those of you that have this particular throw off.
