I had read that whole Slingy section before and he is alluding to the possibility of the leftover original wrap being used on lesser drums. To me, that wrap doesn't look right. I haven't ever seen a White Tiger drumset in person but my red tiger wrap looks to me that the tiger stripes are more pronounced. Mc saying the white tiger stripes were anemic was perfectly worded. That is kind of how I saw them too. I never even noticed the 5 ply stuff. I don't know how to tell the difference in plies. Mikey's eagle eyes seem to still be 20/20. That grommet had some pretty strange marks on the inside of it once I zoomed in like he said. No offense to the seller if he is a member but my thoughts are 100 percent fugazi. Book it.have a wonderful eveningdrumhack PartyCryBabyChewie:DOH:p
Good eye on the wrap, drumhack..... thanks for posting this.
Yep, he's talking about that.
He mentions looking out for forgeries and checking other features aside from the wrap too, which helps in this case.
Just a related point of interest.
Something that gets me is that this seller sells a lot of drums, and has 100% positive feedback....... So he knows his drums, and yet he lists this as Vintage Slingerland, and states he believes it was assembled in the Slingerland factory in the eighties with Keller shells and seventies hardware??
That's quite a stretch......
He might even sell the set if he took off the badges and just got honest about it.
The wrap and all of the hardware except for the floor tom legs, including hoops, lugs, rods, etc are consistent with Niles era drums from the mid1970's and are in excellent condition with minor pitting and a few small rust spots here and there. The White Tiger wrap in in excellent condition with tight seams and minimal wear and fading. The maple shells are a mix and match grouping unlike any shells used by Slingerland in the 70's and were most likely made much later (mid to late 80's?) by a 3rd party supplier like Keller. As near as we can tell, this kit may have been made during a period when Slingerland was transitioning between owners and factories. It was common for workers during those periods to simply order random ready made shells and use whatever wrap, hardware, and badges were lying around the warehouse. We cannot say for sure if this was the case, but based on our research it seems the most likely scenario.
