Fun With Formica 60's Ludwig New Yorker? Last viewed: 1 day ago

Loading...

I love stuff like this! Saw this on Craigslist and thought they were 60's and 70's vintage Ludwig Drums with the wraps taken off only to find out they were 50's and 60's drums wrapped if formica. Massive work to be done on these with some holes to fill and edges re-worked but love the mystery that awaits underneath that formica! My initial analysis of the situation is 22 by 12 kick with 12 by 8 tom from the 60's. No extra holes on the 12 but the 22 is mangled with the dreaded later diamond plate treatment through the re-ring. These 2 pieces I am guessing (hoping) were sold together as an original New Yorker set. The floor tom is obviously a 14 inch Clubdate with some possible extra holes from the later ludwig floor tom leg mounts and legs added. Unless they had it customized by Ludwig at the factory but I highly doubt it and fully expect to find some holes drilled when I take this apart. The other tom is also a 12 but since it has no paint on the interior I am guessing a little earlier 50's WFL. Once again extra holes for the addition of a later ludwig tom mount. I am taking off the hardware and giving them a bath today and getting them ready for formica removal!. More pics to come but here is how they came home from the sellers place.

that looks like a big project, but a fun one worth taking on to complete. I bought a clubdate floor tom awhile back that had those mounts already on it. I decided to leave them and just found the straight clubdate legs to use in them. thought they looked a little better.

Results of round one!

The good:

Formica came right off with just a slight tug!

Sliver sparkle wrap underneath all drums and looks as though it will be in good shape once adhesive is removed!!!

Hardware is in good shape for the most part and should shine up nicely.

The bad:

Badges missing

Lots of contact glue to remove

floor tom did have extra holes drilled for non club date style mounts

and the worse part is that the kick is out of round where they mounted that diamond plate on the re-ring and left the head off.

By the way if anyone has any tricks to put this back in round I am all ears!

Here are some more pics and updates coming soon!

Not an expert on Luddies, but that BD looks re-sized to me: the tom mount seems to be too close to the edge and the screws go right through the re-ring (never seen that before). Perhaps cut-down from 14"?? Or is it that the mount has been moved outwards??

Now the out-of-round thing... not easy, especially for a drum of that size. My best guess would be to soak the damaged edge in water, then put some sticks or ring inside so that the shell is forced to re-shape while it dries. Just a wild guess...

Once again, some idiot trying to ruin perfectly good beautiful drums. Who in the world had rather have that wood than Silver Sparkle. Unbelievable.

Watching this one with curious admiration... can't see the bd coming back to round, short of new ring being fitted.. Hope the guy that fitted the mount's drumming skills equalled those of his butchery skills.

Cheers
