FS feeler - selling my Fibes COF 5.5X14 snare Last viewed: 54 minutes ago

This is a feeler to see if there is interest in my Austin-era Fibes 5.5x14 chrome-over-fiberglass snare drum.

I an the original owner (purchased from Harry Cangany almost twenty years ago). It is un-altered, mint condition, gently played and stored it's limited professional life. ALL ORIGINAL AND COMPLETE, including the original Fibes heads, hoops, and snare. Not one lug, washer, or screw has been replaced, nor does the drum need any repairs. The SFT strainer is pristine and works perfectly. No pitting on lug casings, and the wrap is the traditional chromed spring-steel rather than a plastic/acrylic wrap, which helps give this snare it's unique sound and crispness, not to mention tremendous range, from delicate pianissimo to thunderous rim-shots. You could use it on a gig the day you get it!

This drum is identical, save for the badge, to the drum shown on Bennett Drums as "Buddy Rich's 1970's Fibes Chrome over Fiberglass Snare", with no pitting. And for a whole lot less. Sadly, like Slingerland and Rogers, this drum-maker is no more, so finding another Fibes fiberglass snare in this condition might be almost impossible in the future.

The workmanship on this snare is equal to or better than any of the Fibes/Martin/Corder/Darwin snares I've examined - the chrome is lovely, the brass lug inserts are high quality, even the rubber lug grommets are in place. The fiberglass bearing edges have never been touched and are perfect, as is the shell interior.

Price: $750 o.b.o.

If interested, drop me a private message. I would like this drum to go to someone who will care for it as I have, and preserve it as a piece of drum history, and play it with the abandon that it deserves. If there is no interest here, I'll sadly put it on eBay with a high reserve. Thanks in advance for your interest! Regards, Rick

Rick!

Not a problem at all! THANKS for putting in a price range on the drum, as that will let everyone know where your at price wise. Speaking of your drum, and more specifically, the Donn Bennett Buddy Rich owned Fibes SFT 690 COF that he has up for sale:

I have chatted with Donn many times as he has gotten in touch with me to talk about BR owned drums/cymbals. He DOES have some nice stuff! Anyway, there is a MAJOR problem with the "timeline" on the drum he has that Buddy owned/played from the 70's. I am NOT saying it's fake!, not at all... I am saying that he is in error, because...

Buddy was NOT endorsing Rogers drums in the 70's. Buddy left Rogers in 1967. Buddy WAS endorsing Slingerland during this period.. and .. this is when the infamous Fibes snare drum showed up again, and again, and again. Buddy DID play a Fibes snare drum when he was with Rogers too though, but it was disguised to look like a Rogers Dynasonic in WMP. THAT is the drum Ben Strauss saw and asked Buddy to please STOP playing. I have always wondered just WHERE that snare drum is too... if it even still exists that is. Anyway... the drum Donn has is definitely an early 70's Fibes SFT 690 COF as dated by the build/badge.. ( approx. 1972/73 actually ) .. and this drum would have most certainly been played with Buddy's Slingerland set... not his Rogers. Still... NICE DRUM to own for the BR fanatic!, but not at almost $15,000.00. The price being too high is just my opinion of course.

I have BOTH BR model Fibes snare drums in my BR snare drum collection... and there is a BIG difference in the build/set-up between the two. One is a 1966/67 with the EARLY 1st Fibes badge and the then prototype throw/butt, exactly like Buddy's first Fibes snare drum back in 1966. The shell depth is also a little "shorter" then the final production model that we all know so well, and... I also have a 1973 model that is EXACTLY like the Donn Bennett drum, only in MINT condition. Truth be told, my 1966/67 is also MINT condition. I have only seen THREE of those early build Fibes with the prototype throw/butt: One was Buddy's.. ( which Donn also owns! ) .. one is mine.. and one is owned by a collector I know in NY.

SORRY if this was hi-jacked Rick!, but I know you love this stuff as much as I do!
