Found these in drum case

Loading...

The last time I opened my old drum cases was the day I brought them home.

So I opened them up again last night, found a cracked cymbal, a playlist from the the original owners band and some Ludwig heads that I had forgotten were inside. The heads that came with the set are Remo Pinstripe as shown in one of the attached pictures.

So can anybody tell me about the nearly new Weather Masters that are pictured? Are they any better than what I have on at the moment? Are they worth putting on? Thought I would ask those of you with mucho experience with this stuff.

Hi Bigdrummie!

A very cool, and unexpected, find! You really can't compare the single-ply Ludwig heads with Remo's 2-ply Pinstripes. If you're a heavy hitter, you probably won't be happy with the much thinner single-ply Ludwig heads. On the other hand, if you're playing light to medium volume, or playing a jazz gig, the Ludwig heads will suit you just fine.

Those Weathermasters are most likely from the very late 60's or early 70's. The 750db is Ludwig's notation for "Medium" drum heads, as you can see on one of them. It also means they are 750 mil, which is essentially the same as Remo's thin Diplomat heads. Still, I've always found that the Ludwig 750 lasts much longer and Remo Diplomat. I still use coated Medium Weathermaster heads on all my vintage Ludwig drums and really like the sound they produce. Mind you, I'm not a heavy hitter and more into Jazz.

I hope you find this information useful. Again, just remember that you just can't compare the Pinstripes with your Weathermasters. Have fun experimenting!

I have found the old Pinstripes closer to the old Evans Hydraulic heads. I have two 6" Pinstripes, and one (single stripe) is very dead compared the the newer one (double stripes), and they were both NOS heads!!!! This could be between films (the older clear P/S was the dead one, the newer ebony one was brighter), but I am thinking the older Pinstripes were a bit more dead than the ones of today.

I don't know if it's my imagination- just an observation!!!! I am a poet and I don't know it...

Cool find!!!!

Those older Ludwig heads really work better on any vintage drums that have slightly oversized shells because they were made slightly larger than other brands. They are by far my favorite heads...but the new Ludwig heads are not the same as the older ones.
