Found a really rare but really mangled Leedy Kit today

Loading...

Hello Forum! Been a while since I have posted but wanted to share and get input on what is to be my next project! I believe I have unearthed a Slingerleedy New Jazz Outfit NO. 14. That is the good news! The bad new is that these things are Swiss cheese and missing quite a few parts. Here is what is happening with each drum.

All drums stamped inside April 1963

8x12 rack tom.

Missing all the bottom small lugs

Missing Bottom Hoop and Tension Rods

Re drilled for a Ludwig Tom Mount

Re-ring is coming

Some Outer ply damage

No Vent Hole or Badge? (I know some early Slingerlands had no badges on toms but did not know if they did the same with the Leedy's)

14x14 Floor Tom

Looks pretty salvageable

Missing Legs

Has the push button legs which I am sure don't work

2 small random holes drilled toward the bottom of the drum opposite each other.

No vent hole. No badge

14x18 Kick Drum

Wasn't sure if this was the real deal or not at first. The extra holes for the Ludwig Rail through me until I saw the original Leedy holes hidden in there.

Plus the one spur that was remaining was not a Slingerland style Telescopic Spur Holder like you see in the catalog but more like a Ludwig Club Date, But after consulting the 1962 Leedy Catalog they did actually offer a Ludwig Club Date Style Spur as an option called a Shell Mount Spur.Anyone ever seen one like that? Or better yet anyone have one I can buy or trade for lol?

I am guessing one hoop is original and one is not because they are different sized center strips

Missing one large Leedy Lug

The biggest is issue is obviously the gaping hole where a new spur was attached at some point. May or may not tackle that myself. I have done some pretty serious drum surgery in the past but may try to call for some help on that one to get it at right as possible.

Any input is greatly appreciated and if anyone happens to have any parts I need. Especially the Small and Large Leedy Lugs I have tons of trade possibilities and PayPal!

Thanks all!

That is a cool kit, I hope you can restore them because I know how good they sound.

Much respect for those who have the time and patience to restore beat up drums, I have neither.Bowing

Funny you say that Johnny cuz I swore of restoring any more kits because I ran outta time and space. I got roped in because in all my years of rescuing these bad boys I never came across an 18 inch kick from the 60's. Then this one pops up right down the road. Just took all the hardware off the kick and gave it a bat. Can see that these were originally that Mahogany stain color

That bass drum spur is as generic as they get. They are readily available on eBay for very little money. Grafting replacement wood to fill the big hole, and then installing the spur receiver will be very challenging. In two minutes of an eBay search, I found these for $32. I'm sure that there are many others listed with and without the spurs.

My 1963 Walberg & Auge set that I re-wrapped in Green and Silver simulated Duco came to me with these spur mounts already in place. I speculate that they are made by W&A for the industry. My other 1963 Gold Glass Glitter original wrap W&A set came with no mounted spurs--I use clip-on spurs. However, this bass drum sports one of the same generic mounts on the top for a cymbal rod. Please note the W&A internal tone control T-handle near the bottom of the photo.

No matter how far you push the envelope, it is still stationery.

Thanks for the reply Leedy! I actually have a pair of Luddy nickel disappearing spurs that are pretty close to the same thing and may just pop those on. That big hole will be a challenge I am not sure I am up for. May see what Lawton can do for that. I have done some rehab on my drums with holes close to that size but the proximity to the original lug holes and drilling the spur hole is a bit intimidating. Crazy they offered those Spurs as an option in all those Leedy and Slingerland Catalogs from the 60’s and all I ever see are the Slingerland style telescopic spurs
