The metal rectangular piece at the top and bottom of the hoop is for placement of a bass pedal and cowbell, woodblock etc...Replacement wood hoops is not a bad idea, I did this on one set, but I also use the metal hoops on another...Mouse

This is not the first steel-rimmed Kent bass I've seen-I posted a comment before regarding the infamous "Coffin"-lugged early 70's Kents,which had steel rims on the bass.No cowbell-woodblock holder for this one...
