Very nice drums - and a great story. In 1973, when I was 11, my parents took me to "the" local music store and we walked out with this set - brand new, shiny, wood shells, 4-piece, same hardware as yours less one stand, same snare I suspect, Zildjian 18" crash-ride and hats. I still have the kit and all the hardware except the hi hat stand. I got Pearl catalogs later and dreamed about a big-ass kit like yours.Do you have any pics of you playing the kit back then?

Thanks for providing the awesome pic. Was that your first set? My feeling is that there are far too few pics of Pearl drums from that time era. Cool to see a set in blue sparkle. You look like one happy camper! I do see period correct hihat stands on eBay from time to time-not to costly either. Yes, I do have pics near that time. I will try and dig them out and post. d.:)

I'd be happy to play those pearls for the rest of my life, very nice!! Thanks for sharing.

I'd like to play for the rest of my life as long as health allows. Never get tired of it....my daughter is a drummer/instructor as well. They get passed on to her when I kick. d.Keep on Pl

What ever happened to the dreaded Zim-Gar kit ?

Lost to time...I sold the set to a neighboring family, we both moved to differing places and we have not been in touch for 25 years. But I often wonder, more so now after joining VDF, where those drums ended up. Unfortunately, I do not even have 1 photo of the set for posterity's sake, just some faded Polaroids...maybe a photo restore can fix them up.dband2

Hello deansdrums59I really enjoyed your story and you told it so very well as for the drum kit they look awesome I recently failed in negotiations on a very similar wood/fiberglaas kit in red oysterThat kit was nowhere near the pristine example that you have proudly shared I love white marine pearl drums of any make yours are super duper nice Good luck with them ..Kenwood

Thanks for the kind words Kenwood. Be diligent and patient with searches on craiglist, reverb, ebay. They're out there, some at good prices. The wood/fiberglass kits have nice tone with excellent projection. When you find a set, you won't be disappointed. d.Keep on Pl

Ok, you asked. The first are when they were still in good shape, note the added high-toms, and then after they were lost and returned many years later, I did a sweet gold-top paint job on them and switched to Pearl BLR lugs, a few in this pic... the 13" was cut to make two snares, the 6 1/4 is the best snare ever, the 4 inch is terrible.

Great story and pics, thanks.

I had some of that era's Pearl hardware. I liked it. Mine held up well for a decade or so, but nothing like yours!

Mmm, 6 lug, 6 1/4" fiberglass snare? Very resonant with lots of attack? That would be fun to hear.

By the name of your band (in the 2nd pic) I'm guessing you weren't playing church picnics? ;-)

Wanted: Pearl President floor tom in Golden Grain wrap and rack tom in Tiger Eye (root beer) wrap.

I wondered what happened to the unknown comic.....now I know. Thanks for the pics. I can see some serious jammin in that band pic. That gold paint job looks amazing after plainly knowing the texture of my Pearls WMP wrap. I couldn't imagine going over the wrap...Man that must've been tough, but it looks great. Are you still gigging? d.

That was painted on the fiberglass, not the wrap. I filled in the pinholes, put layers of fiberglass cloth and resin/epoxy into the arm mount hole, filled the other holes with resin/fiberglass strands. It also has the Pearl sr 300 symphonic three way throw, light cable, half a puresound 12strand, and half a puresound double twist set very loose, and another secret weapon, and this snare has 16 distinct sounds, and 12 of them sound fantastic. Top heads at 85, bottom at 82. Gretsch gold 6 hole rims, Pearl Spin tight tension rods.

This band was popular in Fredonia back in '86 to '88, Tommy and his '59 Gold Top Les Paul were the main attraction, that kid could play, he is very popular in Buffalo and NY city circles for classical guitar. All original punk, George Is a Slut being the most popular song.

That is a GREAT story. It appears you were writing a piece to be used later as a writing sample to secure a contract of some sort! Yes, you should pursue more writing opportunities.....paid opportunities. I'm being serious.

That kit is a beauty! Have you kept it this nice all these years, or did you do a thorough restore?

I had a great day! Instead of sleeping in and wasting the day, I got up at 8 and I had all my slacking done by noon!
