FOR SALE: Vintage Sonor Teardrop (1965-1966) in fantastic condition

This sweet Sonor teardrop kit is in superb condition. Very likely a collector piece.

K190 Chicago Outfit 20/13/16/14

100% German beech wood. “Made in Western Germany” badge. No extra holes.

These kits are sought after for their warm and rich vintage tone. Amazing kits, quality German engineering and fabrication.

Bass drum

14” by 20”, 3 ply construction with re-rings. Within 1/16” of perfect round, which by any standard is “perfect round”. The bearing edges are essentially perfect. The wrap has a few very minor scuffs but nothing that stands out. The wrap is lifting a tiny bit at the seam, but it’s is still glued on very solidly and the lifted area doesn’t move. The chrome lugs and t-rods are nearly perfect. A few small scuffs. Some have minor micro-pitting but it’s only visible when staring at them from a few inches away. Comes with original internal muffler/tone control (replaced felt), original hoops, original spurs, original Sonor reso head, original tom arm and a new Remo Coated Ambassador on the batter side.

Rack tom

8” by 13”, 6 ply construction. Within 1/16” of perfect round with super clean bearing edges. The wrap is tight and clean, but it has one scratch on the drummer side near the vent. See photo. The chrome is again in splendid shape. Few scuffs, faint. Very minor micro pitting, hardly visible. The badge has a bit of a faded area as you can see in the photos. Comes with original internal muffler/tone control, Remo Coated Ambassador top and bottom.

Floor tom

16” by 16”, 6 ply construction. Within 1/32” of perfect round, really quite perfect. The bottom bearing edge is perfect, the top has a few small stick marks. Nothing that warrants attention, just a few stick marks away from perfection. The inner most ply of the shell shows some craquelure along the grain of the wood. I’ve consulted the experts and it’s apparently quite common and requires no attention. The wrap is again in excellent shape, a few minor scuffs that you have to look for, but overall so shiny. The chrome is in the same excellent condition as the rest of the kit, a couple very faint scuffs, occasional micro pitting. Comes with original legs, including the often missing round rubber feet, and original "Tom Tom" reso head made by Evans for Sonor. This drum never had a muffler.

Snare drum

5” by 14”, 6 ply construction. Within 1/16” of perfect round, perfect bottom bearing edge, top bearing edge has a couple small stick marks. The wrap is in excellent shape like the rest of the kit. The chrome on the snare top hoop is the worst part of the kit, it has some flaking chrome and some minor rust in some areas. See photo. The lugs and bottom hoop are in much better condition, matching the rest of the kit. The snare butt screw is a reproduction replacement, so is the throw cap. The snare comes equipped with Puresound snare wired, Remo Coated Ambassador over Remo Hazy Snare Side.

Bonus matching “Made in Western Germany” accessories:

- Sonor Champion Z5452 Deluxe Hi Hat Stand in decent shape

- A pair of 14” Tyrko Sonor nickel-silver hi-hats. The bottom hat is cracked and bent beyond hope, but it’s nice for display purposes.

- A 20” Romen “Made in Western Germany” nickel-silver ride cymbal. Sounds quite nice for nickel-silver!

- A Sonor “Made in Western Germany” throne, missing a rubber foot.

The bass drum mounted cymbal arm is unfortunately missing.

The flat cymbal stand shown in the photos is not included in this sale.

The bass drum and floor tom were purchased together as a set in the mid 60’s by John Gedak of The Centaurs. I am the second owner. Neither have a date stamp. The rack tom has been lost, but I found a perfect replacement, date stamp Feb 1966. The snare was also added to the kit, again a perfect match, date stamp Oct 1965.

The kit is available for pick up only in Vancouver BC. I may be convinced to deliver it across the border, in Blaine WA, for a small fee.

Here’s your chance to own a rare and acclaimed Sonor Teardrop, you’re not likely to see one in this condition again in the area.

$1500usd

2K Cdn for an almost complete vintage Sonor kit, with matching snare?Cool1....Consider a new Sonor vintage kit for 3500 for the same thing, in great condition is a bonus...I,d overlook the minor issues for sure.....You may have to ship though.

Thanks!

Shipping from Canada is ridiculously expensive and these kit don't nestle easily.

This gem is here, awaiting it's forever home.

Vancouver is lovely this time of year, just sayin' :D

Well I shipped a 20" bd Premier kit to Montreal once, it all nestled into one box, super tight, and that cost $130cad... If I remove the hardware, assuming the snare and rack tom fit in the bass drum then, plus another box for the floor tom, we're looking at $250 at the very least after I've procured some proper boxes. And that's without any of the cool accessories.
