FOR SALE: 1970s Ludwig 6.5x14 LM402 Supraphonic Snare drum in *amazing* condition

This is the cleanest Ludwig Supraphonic I have ever seen, and it's a wonderful and desirable 6.5" LM402! (yes, this is the snare model that John Bonham played with Led Zeppelin)

Serial # on the blue and olive pointy badge is 1980475, indicating it was manufactured in 1978 or 1979. Stunning condition for a 40 years old snare drum.

Like all Ludwig Supraphonics, and especially the 6.5", it sounds simply amazing. The most recorded snare drum of all times. This is the king of snares!

This drum is so reflective it was hard to photograph the few imperfections. It is *very* shiny and looks amazing from any angle. Most, if not all, the white dots you see in the photos are dust specks... Somehow the photo flash made the dust very apparent.

The shell has none of the usual pitting. It has a few very minor superficial scratches that are hard to see unless you look very closely, see photo. The bright areas around the bead on the shell photos is a reflection of my ceiling... there's no flaking, no pitting. Like most snares it has some wear around the top from drum head collars, but the chrome is not breached. There's one small patch above the butt where the chrome is a little blurry, see photo. There is one barely noticeable shallow indentation near the top where the reflection is not perfect, hard to say what it's from. You can just barely feel it with your finger, I didn't even notice it when I acquired the snare, see photo. The shell is perfectly round and the bearing edges are pristine. The "Ludalloy" round sticker has fallen off, but you can still see where it was thanks to some glue residue, see photo.

The throw shows a bit of pitting on the sides, but still very moderate. It works very well.

The lugs are nearly perfect. One of the lugs has a bit of a rub mark on it's lower corner, see photo. The other ones look almost new.

The hoops are super clean and shiny. I'm not sure that they are the original hoops, but they are a perfect fit.

The tone control / muffler is original and fully functional. The felt is very clean and supple.

The snare comes with Puresound snare wires, a slightly used Remo Ambassador Coated batter head, and a brand new Remo Ambassador Clear snare side head.

Wow.

I got a perfect mint NOS LM-402, B/O Badge, and from the serial # I determined it to be about 1980 manufacture.

Absolutely no pitting of any kind, perfect chrome,no issues, dents, nada. I only ever played it to tune, original Ludwig Rocker Heads top and bottom.

Snare has been in controlled climate storage, not played, have my other 4 mint Slingy Snares to entertain myself with.

No disrespect towards the seller, but simply a question posed, that my Snare might also be worth this sort of money as well?

She's a beaut. My late 70s Supra had some pitting. It's crazy how some of them don't have pitting like yours. Apparently, the owner(s) took care of it. Maybe it came from an arid climate too. Good luck with the sale.

Is yours the pointy corner badge or the rounded corner badge?. The pointy badge models bring considerably more, but certainly a NOS of any kind is going to have some substantial value.

The Badge on my LM-402 looks to be exactly the same as the one in the seller's pictures. Is this what's referred to as a "Pointy Badge"?

If so, then I'm not sure I've ever seen what a rounded corner B/O Badge looks like? Just wishing to learn a bit more is all for personal knowledge.

(PS: I just did a search on the B/O Rounded Corner Badge, no, this is not what mine has, mine has the exact same badge as the sellers, so thus mine also does have the Pointed Corner Badge as well, cool)

I'd probably have to agree that the basic stock issue strand count Puresound Snare Wires can transform these drums from so so, to stellar.

I remember I still have a pair of stock replacement Puresounds lying around, I think 16 strand if I recall (or were they 18?)

I once also owned a perfect condition 1960 COB Supra 400 and tried them onboard. They were very nice, the snare sounded great either way.

But I also seemed to conclude with some inspection of my LM-402 that the Snare Wires that came on the later 70's-80's models weren't quite the same quality as to what once came on the older 1960's Supras?

The joke about my NOS LM-402 was the seller evidently didn't know what he had, thought it was a Ludwig "Rocker" Snare Drum because of the Ludwig Rocker named Clear-Black Dot Batter Head, and Clear Rocker Reso Head on board.

Rocker Snares didn't come with Imperial Lugs that I know of. and the Stamp inside the Shell which could be easily seen confirmed my suspicions and said "LM402".

I paid $200 for that NOS Snare Drum and ran! LOL Only downside might be, I don't have the original Ludwig factory box that it probably came in. Minor I figure.

To tell you how fussy I was when I tuned that drum after acquisition, I wore a pair of Microfiber Gloves as to not possibly leave oils-sweat behind.

Of the 4 other slingy drums I have, but none are for sale, were the 5x14 NOS Krupa Sound King Snare that was tossed in with my mint 1980 WMP Barrett Deems Slingy Set by the seller, a mint 6.5"x14 12 Lug COB Spitfire Deems Prototype that I later acquired from the same seller in even trade for a mint Big R Dyna I had (Randal Siefert, now deceased) a mint 5x14 COB 10 Lug Buddy Rich TDR that I bought from Steve Maxwell at a Chicago Drum show, and the last, a mint 5x14 WMP 8 Lug Artist Model.

Thus never felt a need to place any wear and tear on the LM-402 and kept it in storage packed away with Dessicant Packs after purchase.
