Folks - what are your thoughts on this Slingerland kit? Last viewed: 19 hours ago

I'm gonna take a guess and say this is a kit that some one took apart and painted black. It might explain the different color bass hoop inlays. Take a few lugs off and see if some of the paint(if it is paint) comes off with the lug. I believe the Trods and claws put that bass at about 61/62. If they're original to the bass.

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.

Mid 20th century Slingerland drums with Swivomatic tom mounting hardware and that great snare drum give you the opportunity to have an absolute mofo of a player's drum set. Put some money (maybe $200?) into spiffing up the drums. They deserve it.

No matter how far you push the envelope, it is still stationery.

Looks like a 1N kit to me to, except the 20" BD and the snare throw upgrade.

For $350 though, you could spend 40 hours on the refurb, $200 on parts, and have a really nice Radio King drum kit when you're done.

Keep us posted on those Slingys.

Thanks again to all of you. I actually had to pay a bit more for the kit, but still a great deal. The drums will ship from Muscle Shoals, Alabama. I requested any details they have on the kit's history. I'm dying to know whether they've been used in the local studio.

I have to leave town for a week, but when I get back, I will share more photos and updates about the drums' past and future. I really appreciate all the details and info you've posted. Keep them coming! I'm excited to learn from you guys.

As promised, here are some additional photos of my new 1958 Slingerland drums. I got my first look at them yesterday after returning from vacation. Some of you asked whether they have been painted. I took them down to my local drum shop, and between the owner, the tech, and me, none of us believe that to be the case. This appears to be an original black wrap - or a very old, well installed replacement wrap.

I would greatly appreciate your insights. I plan to restore the kit, but I am new to this and want to do it right!

Thanks,

Tom
