Floor tom questions

Loading...

Okay I have been playing drums for nearly 15 years and I have been noticing this more and more lately, and I have never noticed it before: a double floor tom kit, where one of the floor toms is on the opposite side, near the hi hats. So there is a FT on both sides of the kit.

It started with Dave Grohl playing with Them Crooked Vultures. He also does this in the Noone Knows video with Queens of the Stone Age. Since then, it's almost been like an explosion of this. Is it a trend? What is the purpose?

I don't know, maybe I just haven't been looking for it, or I'm not observant. I just don't understand what is beneficial about it. I know with a Bonham-esque 16, 18 side by side it's a bit of a stretch (for me anyway) to make it to the 18, but it seems like it would be just as bad doing it the other way.

What can this do to help me?

i think it's just a personal preference thing.

i put another snare in that position sometimes. just for a different snare sound on different songs, you can also do a knacky little beat by, basically doing a 16 beat, but with an extra hit on the snare/floor tom under the hats, straight after the main snare hit.

it sounds kinda cool. like a slap back reverb!

... I have never noticed it before...

It's not a new concept, Papa Jo Jones, Chico Hamilton and many others were doing it 50-75 years ago.

i've seen a lot of more peculiar things than that.

some people just get tired of the same old "traditional" set/set-up.

you should check out Chris Dave on youtube.

he uses three snares-bongos as toms-and his high-hats are sabian o-zone crashes.

and he sounds/is amazing.

just gotta got think out of the box once in a while!

it reminds me of when Bonham used to use his hands in a drum solo..that probably blew peoples minds in the 70's.

but little did they know that Joe Morello did it twenty years prior!

there's no such thing as originality. its all been done before.

Yea, directly after posting that, I saw a picture of Keith Moon playing a Zickos kit like that. And I already have an 18 floor tom as my drink, bag of chips, knife collection, pin cushion, and broken glass bottles collection table (I hope you know I'm just kidding). Who is rich enough to have a drum tech, lol?

Papa Jo Jones was also doing it in the '50s, and maybe even before that. Here's a cool clip of him using his hands on YouTube:

...and he has the aforementioned floor tom to his left.

Thinking out of the box is right; Moonie threw away his hi-hat for a long time. I tried that back in 1970 but different material demanded I bring it back. It was good keeping both feet on the bass drums all the time though.
