My 16 & 18" floor toms are supported by 23" long legs.
The ribs at the top are out of the tightening pocket and I have to tighten to smooth chrome. Should I have shorter legs?
I'd have to be a giant in order to clamp to the ribbed part.

Well it looks like anything from 17.5 to 23 is in play... if they are too long... well then they are too long.
"Well darn, I've cut these off twice and they are still too short!" ;)
I see you have a Ludwig kit from you signature. With the bigger toms you want the shorter legs, or new Ludwig ones.
Ludwig Classic FT legs used to come in two different lengths, 23" and the other ones (haven't got a pair to measure 16.5" or 17" -- opinions vary on eBay if you search for "Ludwig Short Floor Tom Legs"). In modern times Ludwig fixed the problem of clamping beyond the knurled area by making the knurled area twice as long. I bought some new ones in 2004 which had the longer knurled area.
On a few of my kits I've used small hose clamps as memory clamps on the legs beneath the leg mounts. The weight of the drum is held by the hose clamp. Nobody but another drummer will ever notice. It's an inexpensive, easy remedy.
Kind of what I expected to hear.
I was just wondering if this was a common situation.
I really don't have a slippage prob. But thought it silly appearance-wise.
Thanks everyone
