Fixing bearing edges on vintage acrylics?

I guess I was setting my sights low with a junior high science fair project... this guy got a National Science Foundation grant to study bearing edges.. Grant No. 9987906http://online.physics.uiuc.edu/courses/phys498pom/NSF_REU_Reports/2003_reu/Eric_Macaulay_Final_Paper.pdf

Amazing article.. and I thought I was a bearing edge geek!LoLoLoLo

Not many know me in this forum, but I build all my drums myself, including bearing edges.. and sometimes I'm lucky and a friend of mine gives me a shell he made (he builds stave and segment shells.. mostly out of walnut, mahogany and padaouk). So I have "a bit" of experience with drum building Violin

Now I agree on most points with Jaye, but would like to add, that the width of the apex (the contact part of the BE) is of great importance to the sound too.

On the case with this acrylic kit, i would go for a rounded apex (maybe even 1,5-2 mm wide) to improve low and mid range, and slightly dampen highs. To give it a god rocking grunt without to much "iiiing" in the sound.

Also it's worth mentioning that you can cut BE on acrylic shells yourself with a router and a specially ordered "cutting iron" (sorry i don't know the correct English word for that:confused:)... it's not that hard, BUT you do need to try it a few times first though!!.. AND you need to construct a reasonable router table first.

But then again: if you can get a pro to do it cheap and to your specs, then let him do it ;)
