Somewhere in this thread

I started writing about a fir stave snare drum that I build. Some of you were interested. I made a video of it. The sound quality is quite low (it sounds warmer in person). And the dimensions a not true (the snare looks much deeper than it is). However, it's an impression.

Not quite a vintage drum, though the lugs are (Yamaha?).

Amazing work!

Yes your video clip is "squeezed", making the drum look deeper - probably a 16:9 image jammed into 4:3 player...although youtube is 16:9 now so not sure how that could happen....

Great build there, Bart! Sounds great too!

Thanks for posting - sounds like a quality build! What does it sound like tuned medium/high?

I had a great day! Instead of sleeping in and wasting the day, I got up at 8 and I had all my slacking done by noon!

The sweet spot is a bit above medium. If I really cranck it, it sounds too dry. In the sweet spot it sounds warm, woody, but still open and it has some very nice consistent overtones. I guess the sound (with the current head) can justly be called vintage. I found out that however hard I hit it (with 2b sticks!), it won't choke, it keeps giving back a nice crack.

In the practice space I hit it a couple of times and the bass-player immediately looked up. "What's that?!". Nice thing about it, is that it is loud, but not brutal; if you know what I mean.
