Finger cymbals aka Zills

Loading...

So I was at this Greek restaurant recently which had this belly dancer. Now, I can't stand it when they dance right in front of you for two minutes, BUT she had these cool finger cymbals, which I've since discovered are called Zils/Zills. Gotta get me some. There's a bunch on ebay. Just wondering if any of you had any experience with these before. Any advice?

Finger cymbals are fairly common in concert/orchestral percussion. I've got a pair of the thick Zildjian ones myself.

I really like the tone from some of the higher-end bronze ones. Zildjian, Sabian, and Paiste all make good ones. The cheap stamped sheet metal ones tend to sound too toy-like for my liking.

Here is a neat little thing that Paiste came up with.

IMO it's very expensive for something like this (http://mycymbal.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=19_55&products_id=1324) but i'm sure you could replicate it with a bunch of zills. (Someday I wish to do this, I love that little thing!) But, it seems like a useful way to add them into a drum/percussion setup. Good luck with your hunting!
