Finding the Sweet Spot

Loading...

Have any of you had success helping a 20X14 Kick find its optimal sound? Obviously sound/sweet spot is an incredibly subjective topic, but what approaches, tricks, heads have you used to get your kick sounding its best?

SideNote: My 20X14 is a 50 year old Premier made of birch. Thanks for any insight you can offer.

Peace and a Groove,

T

For what it;s worth, I only get a sweet spot sound out of my Ludwig club date 20" bass. I happen to use a Remo powerstroke batter head, but that was provided w/the drum when I purchased it. I also have a 22" and 18" bass drum and have yet to find that just right sound.

I too have only been able to find it on one of my bass drums. It is a 14x20 Clubdate. The batter is a coated Remo Powerstroke 3. The reso head is a Aquarian Regulator reso head with a Band Logo put on by Drumart.com. It has a 3" port hole. Both heads are tightened just past being wrinkled. It's the best sounding bass drum I've got out a total of 14. Even though I don't mic the drum I keep getting asked by other musicians what kind of mic I use. When I tell them I don't have it miced they are suprised.
