It's not a match. The Ludwig "blue strata" is essentially a 70's oyster pearl with blue/turquoise in it. This has a very deep blue and no white. I like this wrap, but this is also a really pricey wrap. Just wrapping a 16" tom in it is over $90.

Sorry to hear that the vinyl graphics was costly. On another note that blue strata looks closer to what Rogers and Sonor was using in the 60's.

Which paint? The paint on the floor tom's wrap? I simply removed the wrap and now have a bare shell.

Yes the paint on the floor tom wrap. Hopefully you didn't toss it out....

The original wrap was red sparkle, not a matching blue strata. It was from a different kit and was actually a 3-ply Super Classic, not a Standard. Otherwise I would've taken the paint off by hook or by crook.

Right now the shell is sitting sanded down and wrapless in the garage.

Good news. I was able to create a custom wrap for the floor tom and get a wrap printed through Bum Wrap. Quick service and great guys to work with.

While the resultant wrap is a little lighter than the rack tom, it's pretty close to the kick, and more than close enough for me, since this will be a player's set and not a full restoration.

That does look pretty great. Can you give us details as to what process you used to match the wrap, the quality of the wrap, how it compares to standard wrap, etc?

Nice job.

Sure. I'm a graphic designer, and I knew that some companies would print a wrap based on a computer graphic. I got in touch with Bum Wrap and they said they'd be game to give it a go. It was kind of a no-brainer from there.

Since Blue Strata as a pattern is reminiscent of a 60's "bowling ball" oyster pearl pattern, I did a Google image search for images of those patterns with about the same balance of black and white.

Once I found a fairly large one, I constructed a canvas in PhotoShop at the actual scale size plus one inch bleed - so the image was 54" x 18" in real life. I stretched the image out lengthwise a bit, and then relaid it into the frame like laying hardwood flooring, in "planks". I then blended the seams by merging strands in the pattern -- first black, then white, then grey in various shades.

Then I imported several pictures of the actual drums into PhotoShop and using the dropper tool, created various shades of blue as seen on the actual drums. I applied several kinds of blur to get some of that haziness seen close-up in pearl wraps. My final step was to drop a very light transparent yellow layer over the top to approximate aging. In retrospect I should have made it a bit darker/smokier too, to be a better match with the rack tom, but as it is, it's not far off.

I then uploaded the file to Google Drive and shared it with the guys at Bum Wrap. Within three days (calendar days, mind you), they had shipped me the wrap, and it arrived a week later.

I have never wrapped a drum before, so in regards to the thickness and quality of the wrap, I can't give you an out-and-out answer. It was thicker than I expected. I have heard the horror stories about the wraps purchased on eBay that are cheap stretchy plastic, this certainly isn't like that. It is a real sheet, inflexible, that I had to drill through to install the lugs. It comes with the high-bond tape installed, and once you slap it together, that is really it.

The rest of the parts are in this Friday from Drum Factory Direct, and the missus and I already have a "play date" to get the rest of the pieces-parts back together.

Long winded explanation. I suppose if anyone is interested in having me try to match a wrap pattern for an orphan drum, you could always PM me and I could give it a go.

P.S. Here's the original image. See if you can find any seams. I really have to look anymore, and I made the darn thing!
