I want to fill some holes from bad tom mount fitting jobs in a 20" Rogers kick drum. I have been told that pieces from old shells is the way to go, but I can't find any. My guess is that suitable old 20" kicks (to cut up into pieces) are way more common in the USA than here! So I went to a timber yard and got some nice maple, with the plan of cutting a piece and then sanding it down on a belt sander. Discovered that the maple I bought is like rock to cut with a saw - impossible. Can anyone give me some advice on how to go about this? Just imagine a 20" x 14" 5 mm ply shell with three holes in the top. 2 x old 50c and 1 x 10c size. When I bought this kit it was stripped and varnished kind of orange. Now it's back to maple and I don't plan on recovering it, for various reasons. I don't expect anything seamless - just enough to look OK from off stage. Thanks very much for any tips.
