Fibes Drums

From Brewkowski

TommyP, thanks for that bit of history lesson you provided. I had no idea that Fibes weren't the first acrylic set! I also want to research and listen to Billy Cobham play on these. If you've ever listened to Mars Volta (progressive rock; they aren't for every listener sometimes), Jon Theodore plays them on their debut album in 2002-03. They sound nothing short of amazing on that record and Jon's playing is out of this world! He also toured with them during his time in the band. JohnnyR- I know you buy, sell and trade pretty often on your kits. This might be a way for you to try something new, as you mentioned. But that's entirely up to you of course. Have you researched the Fibes kit online maybe? There may be decent audio/video recordings to get somewhat of an idea as to what they sound like. Best of luck on your decision.

Justin!

BEST album .. in my humble opinion .. to really HEAR Billy Cobham clear as a bell on the Fibes Crystalites, would have to be his first solo album effort: "Spectrum". Grab a listen to that on YouTube and oh my ... yup! ... those are Fibes Crystalites. Billy Cobham played them WIDE OPEN, no muffling. I ended up seeing him with his own band LIVE an additional 5 times during this period, and that would be immediately after he left Mahavishnu. I was a mere 15 feet away from the stage/front when he toured in support of his "Crosswinds" album, and yes, he was still playing the Fibes Crystalites. Oh my. I can STILL hear/feel it to this day! Sidebar: I got one of his rejected sticks at that concert too ... and still have it! Anyway, check out "Spectrum" first, and then go from there if desired!

I had a pre-Martin Fibes 14, 13, 16, 22, COF but I didn't use the snare, preferring the pre-'68 Super-Sensitive that I had, the Fibes snare was stolen & I sold the set to buy the 68 Big Beat I used for many years & still have*. Those Fibes were the loudest drums I've ever owned :D

*yes, the 68's for sale, but you don't want it

The Fibes acrylic was probably the flagship drum kit of their lineup as it still holds its value when compared to other acrylics of that The sound is louder and drier than the Rogers, the hardware between the two is a wash as they both kind of sucked in terms of utility. If they include the Fibes snare and it is intact,Merry Christmas.

Excuse me please. Did I read your post correctly? I think that you'll get a lot of disagreement for speaking negatively about the Rogers hardware that revolutionized and modernized the drum industry. That hardware is still being copied by countless other drum makers.

No matter how far you push the envelope, it is still stationery.

Thanks for a little history Tommyp- got me interested in researching Fibes and Zickos- which were created not far from where I live! I've always been interested in diverse drum construction/ especially when plastics were the 'new thing' as I was starting drumming. I'll continue to increase my knowledge and hopefully hear the LIVE sound of each- great to keep these drums and drummers who used them alive for others to experience!

I'm still thinking about trading my Ludwig wmp kit for this Fibes. The owner will throw in a 24" Paiste 2002 Big Beat ride and a Pork Pie BOB snare.

Jr being yours is not a born complete kit, if you want to try the fibes it could be fun , but you will miss the Ludwig kit one of kind sound, especially if you can find original heads , good luck but you can always find another at a premium mind you,...

April 2nd 1969 scarfed pink champagne holly wood and 65/66 downbeat snare, and , supra same year very minty kit old pies
66/67 downbeat with canister
Super 400 small round knob
1967 super classic obp

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.

Just off the top of my head ,the Fibes and xtras are probably in the $1200 range in terms of value.

That Fibes kit does look mint though.

Ya, those Paiste rides are pricey and those PP snares sound great. I figure since I have a Rogers, it would be cool to have something completely different and the Fibes don't pop up too often.

Jaghog, I thought about that, but Ludwig kits are plentiful, I can always find another one fairly easily.
