Fibes drums questions Last viewed: 7 hours ago

Hello everyone! I'm happy to have finally joined this forum. Of course, part of the reason is that I need some help.

I have a Fibes drum set in what I think is an unusual configuration. It's a 12/13/14/18/24 . The 12 has no mount; the 13 and 14 do. There doesn't seem to be a catalog that shows that configuration, so I'm wondering if anyone has any ideas on what I've got. I'm going to see if I can attach a couple of photos.

I can see that your drums have the "square" Fibes badge which was the 4th and final badge before Fibes was sold to Jim Corder. This dates your drums to approx. 1974/1975. As to configuration/model, what a lot of guys did back then .. me included! .. was start with a cataloged model/configuration, and then add on later. Sizes were at the discretion of the buyer .. meaning .. you could order a Forte for instance, but substitute different sizes within that model, etc. Drums typically would not come with mounts unless requested or part of a particular factory built configuration, and that may be why there's no mount on the 12" tom.

Tommyp - Thanks for the quick response and the info. I'm guessing that the original owner put the 12" on a snare stand.

The set is in decent shape, with one exception. All the hoops and tension rods are there, along with the original logo heads on the bottom of the rack toms. The bass drum has the logo head, but with a hole cut in the center - pretty typical for that era. The floor tom is the exception. The shell cracked and was repaired, and 2 of the 3 leg brackets are not Fibes.

I'd be interested in selling this set. Any ideas on what I could get for it?

SG!

I don't get involved in the pricing area, but there are a lot of guys that BUY/SELL with regularity, and perhaps one of them might chime in with an opinion on value, etc. Otherwise, you might get a kick out of this:

The 1st pic is of my first brand new Fibes set purchased way back in 1973! Please forgive the fashion choice .. Dashiki! .. but it was the 70's, and I was working with this Funk Horn band, and, well ... you know! Anyway, I ended up adding to the set over time, and it became a non catalog configuration .. plus .. the toms were ordered without mounts as I was using the Slingerland Set-O-Matic mounts at the time as they closely replicated the original Fibes supplied Meazzi mounts that Billy Cobham used with his Fibes! So ... looks very similar to yours in configuration! You might take note of the two North drums as well. I was a Billy Cobham FREAK during this period. Actually, weren't many of us??!! :) Ah ... hero worship! Both pics are of course printed photographs as they date to the 70's. Anyway, thought you might enjoy the pics!

Too bad all of them didn't have any mounts.

You would have been better off.

Fibes hardware sucked.

Well, I'd say that you're half right! :) The later Fibes Uniball/Hex Rod tom mount DID indeed suck!!!, and I suspect that is the one you are referring to .. because .. the original OEM Fibes tom holder/mount, cymbal holder, floor tom mount/legs, spurs, were by Meazzi out of Italy. The Meazzi hardware was quite good actually! The Meazzi tom holder/mount was what Slingerland copied with their Set-O-Matic. Almost identical in design and looks... and so much so, that many of us went with the Slingerland SOM for our Fibes sets back in the day. In the early going of the company .. 1965 to approx. 68/69 .. Meazzi hardware was what Bob Grauso installed on all Fibes sets .. unless .. the customer specified something else, as there was also a lot of Gretsch hardware used back during this period. ALL of that stuff was indeed better than what Fibes settled on later with the Uniball/Hex Rod. My 1st Fibes set had the Uniball tom holder, and truthfully, it functioned perfectly, outside of the fact that there was no way to set it up the same way twice! Still, I knew then that it sucked! When I added to the set I redid the tom mounts with the Slingerland SOM, and had zero problems from that point on. On my current Fibes COF sets .. 1967/68 Buddy Rich COF, and 1972 jazz COF .. the tom mounts and hardware are a mixture of Gretsch, Ludwig, and Premier! ALL of that was factory installed and must have been customer requested. All of it functions perfectly in use and aesthetics. Thankfully, there is NO Uniball/Hex Rod to be found!

I remember having to use duct tape on the lower BD tom mounts so that it would sit higher off the bass drum and not hit the bass drum hoop after a few songs.

After a while ,the duct tape would schmoose flat and I would have to rewrap the post again.

I ended up retrofitting using Pearl tube mounts with RIMS and that was the golden ticket .

Thanks guys!

I've spent some time with the Fibes tom mount, and I agree that it's less than ideal.

I could see it maybe working if it was a one person kit set up in a practice space, but I can't imagine gigging with it.

The gut that bought Fibes (Jim Corder),designed a new slide track tom mount that was actually quite innovative.

After he passed ,DW bought the rights to manufacture and is selling it under their own name.
