Factory produced replicas

It doesn't happen all that often in the drum business, I realise. But I give a glaring example in guitars: the $25K Eddie Van Halen Frankenstein. Reflectors are wrong, the blue paint are two glaring examples of the inaccuracies. Fender blended a few eras of the Frankenstein together, it seems. I haven't built a Frankenstein, myself...

I see few re-issue drum kits, but have never been satisfied with what I have seen. For some reason, they never try to have the hardware period-correct. They look like the old kit from ten feet away.

Has anyone here painstakingly tried to make a replica of their drum hero's kit? Would you try to make a replica with the correct shells and hardware, or would you do it with just the correct hardware and the incorrect shells? Would you sacrifice vintage values just to get you hero's kit right, or would you do something that evokes the spirit of the kit?

I wish more manufacturers would do what Nissan did with vintage 280z's- they rounded up some restorable examples and literally remanufactured them!!! They were better than what many people could have done themselves, and they had a factory warranty, to boot!!!

Never knew of the re-manufactured 280Z's. What year did they do this? I dated a young rich girl back in the day and she would pick me up in her fathers 280 and then I would take over, loved that car!

About five years ago.

Edit- possibly more like ten to twelve years back. There were supposed to be 200 of them, but in the end, there were only 40. :(

There is a signature Sonor Phil Ruud kit on Pittsburgh Craiglist for 300 clams. It looks pretty cheesy to me and it has a huge Phil Ruud signature on the kick. The worst part of it is when I first really started to even try to play drums a couple years ago, a guy on another forum told me to try to play AC/DC because their drummer sucked and it was easy to learn!!! I may be tainted for life against Phil Ruud now, because of that forum member!Falling Do

(no offense Phil, if you are a secret member. It was his words, not mine)

have a wonderful evening

I would hate to know what that kit went for new if it's going for only $300!!!!

The biggest problem I have with "signature" items is that it is rarely ANYTHING like what the person in question actually plays.

Case in point: Pearl's Joey Jordison signature kit. It looks nothing like, nor is even really configured like, let alone even in the same SERIES as the REAL Joey Jordison kit. In fact, that identical kit has been relabeled as something else and is currently on sale at Banjo Center for $700!!!!

Now- the Paiste Joey Jordison cymbals, while not what JJ plays, are quite nice cymbals. I play a set of them.

This is all marketing behind very large closed doors in pursuit of the dollar. What is the point of this thread? This is what it is. Beatle wigs and boots ... Cardboard drums with Mickey Mouse or Ringo ... Elvis and Harrison guitars ... and on and on. This is nothing new. If you've been alive for any stretch of time, you've seen (and maybe participated in) all this ad infinitum. it translates to profit for a company and spreads the name of some musician/artist/patsy. Pickled tripe, this is.

A few years back, Premier released a limited edition replica of Keith Moon's "Pictures of Lily" kit. They spent a lot of time on getting the graphics just right—there's a Who site that posted the informative promotional brochure—but it included modern hardware instead of the old Rogers Swiv-o-Matic fittings. As a result, they couldn't exactly mimic the tom placements, and it didn't look as cool as it might have.

I play with a guitarist who uses a Fender Joe Strummer replica. It sounds like a Fender, but looks ridiculous.

My point is this: if you're going to do the "limited edition, cost a zillion bucks" thing, do it up right. If you're going to do a truly limited edition, do it RIGHT. Otherwise, the "Spirit of Lily" kit could have (and should have) been a production kit.

Yes, I HATED the "new" Ford Thunderbird (I used to own a '60).

Yes, Fender's "relics" are just over the top. They are quite cartoonish in their aging treatment.
