I've been hearing really good things about these drum heads, especially on YouTube. But I gather they sound like G1s, except they have a better coating.

Yes, I'm a big fan of Evans UV1 heads since I tried them last year on the recommendation of my artist relations rep, Steve Lobmeier. Steve and I have worked together for years, and he knows what I like. I have an endorsement with Evans and also with Pro-Mark. Both companies are owned by D'Addario.

The UV-1 heads have finally given me the warm, fat, round and resonant tone I have always had in my head for my tom toms. I don't like a sharp attack, like you get with Remo Ambassadors on toms (they're nice on snares though), and I have tried many types and brands of heads. Remo Emperors come close to what I like, as do Evans EC2 heads, but UV1s really nail that sound and they don't dent, don't get marked up and don't look like crap after a dozen gigs. Some heads are a compromise; they're fat and warm, but lack ring and resonance. UV1s are perfect for me, but YMMV.

Evans has recently released UV2, a two-ply version of the UV1, for heavy hitters, I guess.

Hint: Try Evans resonant heads on the bottom of your toms, the thinnest ones they make. You'll get a nice ring, coupled with the UV1s.

I know your a fan of these UV1s, and I may still go that route someday, simply because you and many YouTubers are such fans, but I just love the fat warm sound I get from these Calftones. And so far, they are holding up really well. Maybe they fixed some of their issues.

As long as you like them, that's what matters.

Im a UV1 fan also. I had them all the way around my main gigging kit until I went to all natural skin (mainly Kentville Kangaroo). The are very durable and consistent. The sound doesn't seem to change over time. Although I’m not a heavy hitter by any means!

I love UV1s and Calftones. UV1s (I still need to try the UV2s) end up on all my snares now because they sound great, tune up easily and that coating is impenetrable. Seriously, I've had my main snare with one forever now and it still looks brand new.

Not only do they look new forever, but last year I took one off a snare that had been gigged for almost a year & it wasn't concave at all, flat like out the box. Crazy!

I have no idea what the deal is with UV1 heads, but whatever it is, Evans has the durability thing down pat. I stopped using Remo heads pretty much years ago, because they didn't hold up, they dented easily, and I had them separate off the hoops. The folks at D'Addario have treated me very, very well indeed over the years, and I'm convinced they make the best drum heads in the world.
