Electronic drums...

Ok. So I haven't seriously looked at electronic drums since the Simons SDS9 was around. I guess those are vintage now right?

Anyway, I have been thinking about an electronic kit, like Roland V drums with mesh heads or something with a good feel and where I could sample my real drums and cymbals if I wanted

Oh, and probably used because I don't want to spend two grand.

I figure someone here must have some knowledge. Hip me to the best bang for the buck in used electronic drums for practicing.

Thanks!

Since we'll be moving into a new house in the city next spring and I won't be able to play my acoustic drums in ( or next door in a seperate small house like I am now ) the house ; I'm looking at one of these (new). Great bang for the buck ( under $ 400 here in Japan ) and upgradeable ( mesh snare , etc...) I've been poking around on line and like the looks of the Alesis DM10 kit.

But I have to play it!

As you may have guessed I tend toward Yamaha but I saw a demo of the DM8 kit and it was impressive. I think my local Sam Ash would have them... Need to check out a 20" K Custom Dark crash too if they have one... Love my 18 and they just released a 19 and a 20.

Just watched a good part of your video and those do impress... I like that they are apparently very quiet.... That's the point of I'll just play my bop kit!

I guess I need to check some stuff out.

Welcoming any more input!

Ok. Spent more time looking and I'm coming back around to V-drums or Yamaha. Maybe.

The Alesis gives amazing bang for the buck but the reviewers are mixed on Amazon. I take it with 3/4 cup of salt considering the source but most of the negatives suggest saving up and going V or Y.

I still want to play them. MayBe this week I can get over to Sam Ash and check them out. Playing sounds and the actual acoustic volume when I play. The added cymbals on he Alesis makes it attractive for me as well. Four Tom pads too. I believe more can be added too, but not sure. If the apparent technical issues can be worked around, that's a pretty sick set up.

If however the technical and durability issues cannot be resolved, I need to spend more money. Plus the top end Yamaha high hat with two actual plastic cymbals on a hi hat stand makes a lot more sense to me. I need two crashes and a ride and one up two down is fine. My big kit is three up three down (left hand floor Tom) and the Alesis could replicate that I think, although I practice a lot more on the small kit to force more creativity.

Anyway, looking for more input!

Hey J!m,

Sorry to take you up on this only now - but I only just joined here. I've looked into a lot of electronic drum sets during the past years, and I've become very impressed with the Alesis kits (especially the new Alesis Nitro)...

So I'd be interested what you (as an experienced drummer) went for and how you like it?

Any feedback would be much appreciated!

I haven't bought anything yet. Haven't had time to play much at all this past year or so but since my last post I tried all I could at Sam ash and the top end Roland kit is what I want.

Having all toms tunable and the more realistic feel are appealing. Sounds are great.

It is more money than I can spend so I may try to collect pieces used and put one together over time.
