Eddie Ryan Kit Help

Loading...

Hi,

I'm pretty new to drums and acoustic kits, so please bear with me.

I recently have been given an old drum kit, I'd never heard of Eddie Ryan until now. It needs a bit of refurbishment, I'd like to do as much myself as I can.

The kit is missing a few bits and pieces. The hardware is a little bit corroded in a few places, possibly from being stored in a garage for the last ten years...

The bass drum, tom mounting bracket (I'm not sure if it has a specific name) is cracked and missing the pole for mounting the toms on. It's also oval, and the guys in my local drum store didn't have one.

As it's not really usable with out this mounting system, to replace / repair this is my first goal.

A quick google seemed to suggest that is is a Premier bracket, but no where seemed to have one in stock, or a mounting pole.

It also brought me to this forum;

So I thought I would ask you nice chaps for some advice.

Any suggestions or help on refurbishing this kit would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers,

Andy

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.

Well it might of been fitted out with some Premier parts but its not a Premier. It a completely different make and I think it was a small concern. You don't see many of these kits ever so getting replacements could be a challenge, but if it was a premier part then they are in abundance on uk eBay. Anyway Eddie Ryan is still alive and well and is still refurbishing/restoring drums. So he'll be your first port of call.

Hope that helps.

Oh look, it seems that Eddie is the coolest guy in the world...or at least one of the very most. :)

Thanks guys.

Yeah, I saw Eddie Ryan's site. I'll be honest, regardless of how cool he comes across, it doesn't fill me with a huge amount of confidence... :P

But that's probably just me being cynical.

I will send him a message and see if he has any advice.

Is there anything specific I should be looking for, on an old kit like this, that might be damaged, or need replacing, that a beginner may not notice?

Thanks again :)

Don't forget Nick Hopkins in Britain. Super nice man, and very well stocked with those hard to find Prem parts.

important to check on a kit that has been stacked away in a garage for a long time:

arw the shells in round?

are they flat (no space when you put them on a flat surface)?

are the bearing edges in tact?

if it has re-rings: are they glued to the plys, or have they let loose?

then there the functionality of the lugs and hoops (hoops should be flat as well)

apart from heads these are the most important things for getting some decent sound out of them.
