Ebay blunder and a tale of 2 COB GK snares

Loading...

The last gig I did was in 1991, I recently decided to start practising and maybe clean up and work on some old drums like I used to. I've bought about 12 old snare off of ebay, mostly mij stuff to fool around with. I still have a bunch of drums that have been in my shop for 20 years or so.

I wanted to buy a chrome snare for my chrome Slingerlands, I haven't been on ebay for a long while either.

Long story short, one of the first snares I saw was a 70's COB Gene Krupa 8 lug snare SHELL, only had a silver/black badge. I thought great, I could look around and find all of the part to put it back together and not have a bunch of money into it, I paid $70 plus shipping, MISTAKE.

I began to realize people are stripping every off drums and parting them out and also breaking sets up and selling drums separately.

My first thought was that was a bad thing but now I'm thinking it is a way for people complete their set with a matching drum or fix up a favorite cool old drum.

From what prices I see for parts I'll be way more into it than had I just bought one complete, which I did as well.

Just a zoomatic strainer is $65-$100 depending on condition.

I got a black/gold badge COB GK snare off face book marketplace, with shipping total was $225. The snare has a few scratches but in very good shape overall.

Question; is there any place to buy NOS or Chinese made or any option for inexpensive parts and hoops to put a snare like this back together? I realize it will be funky but I would still like to utilize the shell. I've been keeping a eye out for parts and I'm sure I can find a strainer with the same screw pattern.

Thanks for any tips!
