Just picked up a nice 8x14 Ludwig Coliseum snare drum with the Classic strainer with 12 abused adjustable wires. After spending and afternoon learning the best way to set up and adjust the unit I was somewhat unimpressed with the snare response and sensitivity. Looking around the internet I did find one solution that used regular snares and a P32 butt end. But I figured there's got to be a way to accomplish the same goal of using standard snare units without having to replace the classic butt end already in place. So here's what I have come up with, and importantly, it works! By running the snare cord through the snare gate and around the butt plate I get the pressure to pull the snares up against the head the same as if using a standard butt end. On the other side, running a loop around the nut that screws down on the P87s snare plate and coming up from behind and through the snare gate and tying off on the snare unit with a square knot it once again serves as an elegant solution that puts all the up pressure needed to get whatever snare response you need. And it sounds fantastic now. Perhaps the best wooden snare drum I've ever played. And if need be, I can replace the original adjustable snare unit in 5 minutes without removing either drum head!
