I now own 2 early production Pacific kits with what I call the "Dr.Seuss" lugs-round with an indent on each side like someone squished it.Very standard Taiwan build,7/8" pipe mounts, inexpensive snare strainer, steel BD hoops, standard 12/24 rod threads etc. One set came with RIMS style mounts, one without. I cannot find any information on these drums. What is the series called? Did they sell along side the Mexican built sets? I replaced the steel hoops on one set with later PDP WMP wrapped wood hoops and the set sounds quite good. Also the inner ply looks to be possibly asian maple or another nicely grained hardwood. There is no series designation on the badge. Any info is appreciated.

Hi teverson!
I found those lugs intriguing, so I looked through my PDP catalogs and actually found your set! It shows in my 2001 catalog as the "EX", which was the entry-level offering. The text says it used "composite wood shells". The EX was offered as a prepackaged kit, available in only two colors... Jet Black and Wine Red. I hope this helps!

I used to have a Black EX kit like the one catalog page pictured. Now I have the one with the RIMS mounts and matching wood snare drum. I was calling these lugs, pillsbury dough boy lugs cuz it looks like his belly after being pinched.

PDP also made a 3" x 13" Steel Shell Piccolo Snare Drum with those lugs that was around in the mid-2000's. I have one and it's great.
I like the different names for the lugs. I always called them "radio knob" or "oven knob" lugs.....that's what they looked like to me!

Yes! I remember that snare and used to own one myself. Guitar Center had them on sale at one point back then for $50.

I found a black kick for 25.00 and I could not find out anything online either,I am assuming they only used those lugs for a short time?
The drum sounds quite good,and the inside ply on mine does not look like Luan mahogany either,looks more like wood I have seen on 70's 80's Tama mid level kits like Royal stars etc.

@idrum4fun - I have 2 Pacific LX series kits which I believe are from 2000/2001. I'm trying to confirm the colors and if you still have those catalogs would appreciate if you could check what colors were available. One is chocolate lacquer sparkle. I'm not sure how I found the name years ago but I believe that's the actual name or something very similar. The other kit is a very similar brown to the first one, but no sparkle in it and you can see the wood grain up close. 5-10 feet away they look almost identical.
