Early 80's Ludwig Red Mahogany kit Last viewed: 1 hour ago

I am close to pulling the trigger on this kit and wanted to get some feedback first. This appears to be an early 80's Ludwig four piece kit in Red Mahogany finish. The sizes are 8x12, 9x13, 16x16 and 14x22. The seller says the shells are in the round and everything is original. There is one tom finger missing and one floor tom leg (I have both). These are the thicker shells without the re-enforcement rings. Does the finish appear to be original to you guys? What would be a reasonable price assuming they are all original? Is there a modern Ludwig tom holder that I can use without adding new holes? Thanks guys.

Hi Vern!

The finish does appear to be original, although a bit faded. Looks like there might be some snare rash on the 12" tom, which can be common. When you say "tom finger" do mean the missing L arm on the tom holder? All in all, it looks like a nice kit. Let us know if you decide to purchase it.

Yes. Tom holder. What do you think a fair price would be? The twelve inch is a bit more faded than the rest of the drums which is almost to be expected.

Vern,

I'm not sure about prices for the 6-ply shells... but... I'll wager a guess of $600 - $900. Is that anywhere in the range the seller is asking?

Yes that is consistent with what the seller is asking. At some point these 80's Ludwig's have to appreciate in value right?

I hope so. I have a few, including one very similar to this, but in Mahogany Stain Lacquer, which is darker.

Any vintage Ludwig, even some from the 80's, in decent condition at the $600-$800 range is a good deal ..

Btw, as i'm sure you are aware, those are 6 ply shells and weigh a freaking ton !

Let us know how it turns out ;)
