Early 70s Pearl President Phenolic SENSATION

Loading...

Early 70s phenolic Red Oyster President set, 20/13/16. The bass drum came to me already cut in half, making a pair of 7x20s. That ends any originality potential, so I modded the bass drum without any further care for propriety.

80s Pearl spurs were added and a 1/2" steel doobie bar setup give it a nesting/telescoping function. FT can travel inside BD and shell can be played with gap a la Gretsch's Catalina Street BD. The larger the opening, the fewer the overtones. When closed it sounds remarkably normal and it dries out when opened.

Toms sound stoopid good, like harder, thinner Remos. Loud, wide open with long sustain is easy with these.

Really a premium sending unit here. Really lively shells. Try one with diecast hoops and a Gretsch tuning. Excellente El Presidente.

That is really cool. I wonder what the purpose was for cutting the shell in the first place? A nice side benefit is that you could turn either one into a pseudo gong bass drum by simply hanging the existing mounts to a pair of L-Arms.

Also, I really appreciate your observations regarding the size of the opening and it's impact on the overall sound. I had always assumed as much but you have provided some adjustable proof positive.

Righto tnsquint. I haven't miced the BD up yet, but I am sure that the SPLs will be lower at the head's port with the shell open. Closed shell will give maximum gain.

The pitch also seems to lower as the gap is widened. It doesn't really, it just diminishes the high/mids.

Nice job on the drums!

Again, I do not know who did that to that kick (it came to me from Redding, CA cut into two halves). You have made the best of it for shure.

Also, I am glad to hear the praise for Presidents....they truly are great sounding drums.

That is a GREAT idea as to what you did with the already-cut-in-half BD... and you've given me a GREAT idea as to what to do with a couple of Ludwig 10x26 late 70's marching BD shells!!

Is the black "trim" you used on the inside edges just standard trim for marching quads or quints?
