Need help identifying this kit.
Early 70's Pearl kit? President Lugs?
Another shot.
And another.
Ah, the world of Pearl... President lugs with mounts indicating the period prior to 7/8" pipes. If it wasn't for the lugs I'd say post-"Battleship" period- but is it? Is it a phenolic-shell set? Or grey Luan? Or clear Luan?
I know that they aren't Phelonic shells, how could I tell the difference between the gray and clear luan? (Sorry, I'm a total noob to the vintage world)
If they're gray, you'll know it... it's a painted interior.
Actually, IMO you've got a rare kit... because it appears that this one was built during a transitional period. UNLESS someone added the mount at a later date, which I would think was also possible. There would probably be some sort of evidence (extra holes or enlarged holes) visible on the inside, if that was the case.
In either event, unfortunately, these never bring big bucks. But I'm sure they sound fine!

The shells aren't gray, so I guess they're clear luan. The holes on the inside seem normal, and they do sound great. It's definitely different than my Keller maple kit, but not in a bad way. And, yeah, the guy I bought the kit from included all the cymbals and hardware. The used cost of the cymbals alone exceeded his asking price, so I just dove in. I'm pretty happy about it. I would love to know precisely what year they're from, though. Apparently Pearl's serial numbers are close to meaningless.
I've learned more about Pearl in the past two days than I ever have before, and I still cant't find the one answer I need. Lol.
See my post in the other regular vintage forum (with catalog pages). I think Bill is right on - transition from 72 to 73. With the cymbals that's a great deal.

Awesome! I really appreciate the help, guys. I've read about people coating the inside of their luan shells with shellac? Is that something I should consider doing? (Again, I'm a noob)
