Early 60's Jazz Fesival basket case acquisition.

The good: pre-serial, mahogany/poplar/mahogany 5x14 shell, WFL p-83.

The bad: lugs are really pitted, mismatched COS hoops, black paint on the throw-off, import butt, wood glue slobber on the re-rings, no date stamp, and the previous owner put a modern tone control into where the original small knob one should be.

Also looks like the bearing edges were sanded. Maybe?

Looks like a novus polish on the wrap, and a dawn bath for the lug casings.

I think after the dawn bath, I may try several different methods of cleaning the lug casings to see which works the best.

I agree with kevins, looks like a great project. Minimal fading on the wrap too.

I know it's sacrilege to say, but you could always replace the lugs with brand new ones (Ludwig still sells them).

I was actually thinking of doing that because I have a new strainer, butt, tone control tension rods and hoops.

I could use the old parts on another 5x14 shell in red sparkle that I'm trying to get back from an old highschool friend. That shell was part of my brother's original drumset, I'd like to restore that one and give it back to my brother.

I like those barrel nut tone controls. They take the hits and don`t break.

I actually took the tone control and re shaped it to fit the correct (vintage) way, with the screw an knob reversed. The way it was pictured it had to be cracked all the way down and only one edge would touch.
