Duplex Brass Snare 4x14

Loading...

I picked up this Duplex Brass Snare a couple months a go and don't know where to start. I haven't worked on an old brass snare before, and this one is carrying decades of neglect.

Can anyone I.D. this drum? It appears to be a Duplex based on the throw off. I believe Slingerland used the same throw off on it very early "student" models. I'm guessing this is a 30's or 20's drum? The round wire snares appear to be in tact and I'm not sure if there's a trick in removing them.

The shell and hoops are brass. I think the clips are steel. It appears to have been nickel plated but the plating looks to be missing on sections of the shell, unless that's not what I'm seeing. Would this be a candidate for re-plating? Cost prohibitive?

Wow, your gonna need the real experts for this one, but, It sure is worth the time and money to restore. Please keep us to date on the project, it will be an interesting thread to follow.

Thank you!

That is a neat old drum. If it were me, I would just clean everything up the best I could before I did anything else. I don't think it needs alot of work. Could you measure the distance between the strainer mounting holes for me. I have a similar looking drum with no strainer. It looks like one like yours might fit. Thanks, Gerald.

See my suggestions over at the DFO forum where you posted basically the same thread. Sorry don't have time to type things twice.

Thanks Creighton. I posted it here a couple days earlier, without much response. I was mainly hoping for some info about the drum. Naturally I'll be following your advice.

Nearly certain it is Duplex. Cool old goat. Personally, i would not attempt to restore it. A light cleaning and heads. You have a beauty!

I don't know, but I'm pretty sure he owes me a hollow block or something. Can't wait the hear this drum. I just don't want to ruin it. I'm attempting to find out what is stock on it before I disassemble. I've received some feedback the large "rubber washers" underneath some of the mounting clips are not original. They look old so I can't tell.

2016 UPDATE:

Two years after picking this drum up I'm interested to see if it could be a player. I cleaned it up and decided it looks beautiful with it's brass knickers showing!

I'm thinking about trying some triple flange hoops on it, but I'm not sure what options there may be for snare wires. As you can see in the photos, the drum has the original old throw off and the old round wires that thread through a rubber receiver that rests above the resonant hoop. There is no butt.

Are there any solutions for using modern wires that don't involve drilling holes? I can't get this drum to sound usable with the original wires.
