drums with internal microphones.........anyone?

Loading...

Anyone have any practical experience using or installing internal mics in a snare drum?

What type mic would you recommend?...and do you need to install an XLR jack in the shell, or is it a 1/4" RCA jack or what? any input would be helpful, considering doing this

on one of my latest creations...............always thinkin'

Don't do it, unless you still are miking on the outside too.. Too much snap and not enough body. Very convenient if you aim at the bottom head and need to add some crispy snap. Not so much if your only mic.

I have internal mics on all toms and kicks with wonderful results. Snares... not so much..

Feel free to ask more...

Oh wow! that's exactly the reason I ask questions here, I know I will get a straight answer.

I will cool my jets on the mic'ed snare project, sounds like a case of not really being an enhancement to the sound, and presents an unnecessary challenge for sound engineers.

I've witnessed a few sound guys go off their nut when things are less than perfect.

I am intrigued about the toms though, good results there using what exactly?

are they just like clip mics mounted internally? or some new-fangled shape device kinda like the flat bass drum mic by Shure? Just wondering.

Thanks,

Glen

The tom and kick mics are actual mics from EV & AKG. There is a company called May that specializes in this. They take the actual mics or the capsule from the mic, put it on a custom made mount made to fit in the drums. Check them out HERE. The SM91 and now the Beta 91A has been around for quite some time and is not some new fangled device.

I have the best results by pointing the internal mic towards the bottom head in the toms....

The "MAY' system has worked absolutely fabulously for me. It's not cheap, but you'll never regret it.

It's fast for set up and the sound is about as consistent as you can realistically hope for. With regard to the snare, the usual situation in a concert environment is one mic on top pointed down & one mic on the bottom pointed up to get more 'snare' out of the drum. The May mic reversed that - there was so much of the snare that a top mic was still utilised to give an optimum balance.

Verdict: pricey but pro.

I am thinking of a Premier 3000 or something like that. That had internal snares and a mic hole. Rare as hen's teeth and probably more expensive than a Rock Nine...

I would think that you would want a pretty deep shell (greater than 8"). Maybe a shielded SM57? A kick drum mic adapted for the snare?

Try it- great things were created because of the desire to create elegant solutions to common problems.
