Can't say I have ever paid attention to a drum riser except when it's too small.
9 out of 10 times, it's the club's problem, for me anyways...

I have a riser I made out of 2x4s and plywood for my basement. The floors are unlevel and I get seepage from time to time. Not real portable but I have used it a time or two on outdoor gigs.
