drum rims without lug holes -- do they exist?

Loading...

Hello all,

I have a 12x15 marching snare that I'm converting to a floor tom, and was thinking of using metal rims on it. Only problem is, it uses 10 lugs instead of the 8 you'd usually find on a 15" tom -- and they're the claw type. It got me thinking, does anyone make metal rims without lug holes? And in a 15" size? Maybe I can repurpose some non-musical drum rims somehow?

Thanks for entertaining my obscure question...!

Ebay would be your best bet to fine the rims..Yes companys back in the day made 15" rims with no lug holes..But are hard to fine..I think you can still get 15" 10 hole rims from Ludwig ask from Marching drum rims...Mikey

Thanks for the tips. This is one of those questions that I ended up figuring out an answer after I posted it...hah.

For the record, Drumfactorydirect does sell single-flanged drum rims without lug holes, but not a 15". They're also pretty expensive. I also entertained the idea of getting some made, but that's probably also expensive.

I'll probably just end up using a 8- or 10-lugger, since they're so common. I liked the idea of having a sleek, lug-holeless look on the rims, but I don't really want to pay an arm and leg for it.

Evan...

Look around, as I'm almost positive that someone makes a 15 inch single flange hoop. I'm am 99% i saw them in a black chrome finish somewhere.

Remember something else.....you may find a 15 inch hoop that was manufactured for another use, not specifically for a drum hoop. That will still work for you. Try googling all kinds of combinations and I'm sure you will find them.

I have found, when restoring drums that you sometimes find the parts you need in the most unlikely places....I know a guy that rebuilt an old strainer using parts from a lock!!

Check out these links. There are a lot of drum parts supply houses that carry single flange hoops & clips. Here are a few, if you don't see what you're looking for give them a call, most don't list everything they carry on their site. Hear you go:

BTW, I've used all 3 of these suppliers before & they are top notch!

Thanks folks. I feel like I've looked pretty thoroughly -- including at all those places listed, as well as non-drum sources (even at embroidery wood hoops!) -- and none advertise 15" single-flanged hoops. Maybe I'll ask them.

I don't understand why single-flanged hoops are so expensive...must just be scarcity and low demand?
