Drum Mate Drums

Hey - I have been looking for information about my old Drum Mate drums for years on the internet and all that I have ever found is a couple of sales on eBay - and then today I found a reference to them being mentioned here. Hooray !

Someone mentioned them being a precursor to "Star" drums which evolved into Tama. Where did this information come from? I have found no reference to Drum Mate in any Tama information.

This would be very cool as 25 years later when I bought my second drum set I just happen to choose Tama Maple Starclassic - it would be very cool if I could think of the two sets being cousins.

Yes, they are cousins! Look at this:

In 1973, you'll find that out, Star (= previous name of TAMA) offered the brand 'Drum Mate' as well.

Hello there!

I'm very happy to have found this thread as I've always wondered about the origin of my Drum Mates that I received as a Christmas present in 1984.

I still use the toms on the kit that I play regularly...

Welcome to both of you! Ralf or myself, in addition to several others, can give you almost any information you want or need, as well as pointers and "how to" for restoration.

Restoration and deep detailing can give you intimate insight into your drums and allow you to see things you may not know or understand about them. Having owned them as long as you both have, you may be surprised to see some details about them you might never have known without it. And deep cleaning will allow you to refresh some parts that typically get corroded or just plain gunked up over the years. Let's see some pictures of your kits!

Drum Mate is a brand name owned by Star, not a precursor. Here is a link to the 1966 Drum Mate catalog. There are later cats as well, just thought you might like to see the first year of production.
