I have a small collection of vintage kits. A 70s black panther Ludwig maple three ply with clear emporers on top and ambassadors on the bottom. Sounds great. What should I put on my 3 ply mahogany Ludwigs and my round badge gretsch (not three ply). The Ludwig mahogany is a 64 bop downbeat, the wfl is a 57 bop and the gretsch is a six ply round badge silver sparkle, 12, 16, 20. I wondering whether to try those Aquarian modern vintage. What are you using and how do they sound? Thanks
Drum head advice for vintage Ludwig, wfl and gretsch
For 3 ply Ludwig, I use coated Ambassadors on top and bottom...I like the sound of them...
Cheers

1970`s John Grey Capri Aquamarine Sparkle 5x14 snare
1941 Ludwig & Ludwig Super 8x14 snare
I use coated Ambassadors on the batter and clear Ambassadors on the bottom, except for the kick which has a smooth white Ludwig logo head. On my Gretsch rb I have the same, eccept the resonate head on kick is an Aquarian American Vintage, it was on the kit when I bought it.
I love the wide open sound that coated Ambassadors produce.
Coated Ambassadors or Coated Diplomats....(psssst...I play jazz)

Anyone try suede ambassadors?
On my club date kit I got Evans Calftones and they sound great on the 12 and 14 toms. Highly recommend.
I've also found UV1s to be super solid heads that last forever and are a dream to tune. Super easy to get a good sound out of them.
