I have slowly converted all of my hardware and small instrument storage on shelves to plastic bins. I will attach some photos that were taken a while ago and are an intermediate stage. Sorry for the fuzzy photography. I mark the sides and top with a black felt tip marker and use some Goof Off to erase the label if I change the contents. I collect pedals and wrap them in cheap cotton bar towels that I buy at Wally World inside the bins. It keeps them from scratching each other and keeps the various parts and beater together in the bin. I used to keep everything in printer paper boxes but that only works up to a certain size. I keep sticks and mallets in the light weight aluminum tool "brief case" boxes that I buy at the big box hardware stores.

I invested in Cymbal carry bags and have 8 that I keep them stored in, drums sets are all in either hard or padded soft side cases (makes it safer when stacking). For the stands i keep some of the vintage ones in Drum Canister thrones which are sitting "on display" and for the rest of the stands some I keep in their original boxes others are just stacked standing up in a closet. Like you, the pedals are in bubble wrap in boxes. Snares are on racks (Proline from GC) and I have large racks that are 4-shelves and hold 7 per shelf.

Many older style suitcases are great for hardware bags. That's all I used for years. I got the kind that had some built-in wheels and a detachable strap. Most always they are made from waterproof material. I either got them for free or paid a very minimal price at yard sales, etc.

Plastic storage bins from Costco are also great for long-term, indoor storage.

I have an old friend with some really old drums and hardware that is really clean.

He had his stuff in trap cases, but he wrapped all of his stands in towels before putting them in the trap case. He had some Premiere stands from the 60's that were like new when I sold them for him a couple years ago.

That is an idea that hadn't occurred to me, but I do something similar.

I wanted to chip in with this photo of some PVC pipe used to store a ham radio antenna. Note the caps on the ends that I thought might contribute to the conversation.
