I can't tell if those are really sloppy open rolls or horrendous closed rolls...
They're probably less accurate but more authentic to the style these calls were played back in the war days. Those drums are really hard to get any kind of bounce from, for one thing. When you've got lead balls skipping across the field at you, it's probably forgivable!
Sloppy? Yep! Accurate? Probably. You can see the two drummers have completely different techniques. The guy closest to the camera has a more trained stroke. But the other guy is getting more volume.
