Drilling consolette on a bass drum

Loading...

Hello everyone,

First off, thanks to all who posted.

I appreciate everyone's thoughts on this matter and I always enjoy hearing both sides/arguments.

I've had this bass drum for about a year - it's a Ludwig 26" (Yes 26"!!) B/O pointy badge black cortex with silver sparkle trim on the hoops. The size of the drum was one thing that I forgot to mention in my original post. That's another major reason for the whole "consolette postitioning" concern. I've had these Bonham sized drums for so long that I've finally decided to go ahead and just set it up, green sparkle and all. I'm just not sure of how far up to set the rail etc. The tom is a 14x10 (diameter x depth).

I'm now torn between just leaving it alone (keeping it's virginity - lol!) and just finding another 26", but then I would end up spending more money just so that I can preserve this bass drum's wholeness and why? Will it be that much more valuable than the same drum with a consolette on it? Hmmm...

This is basically how the kit will end up looking if I do it Bonham style:

A 10x14,you must sit pretty high to play that tom if its going to be mounted on that big kick. Didn't Bonham use a snare stand for his tom?

No kidding! That's going to be up there on a 26" bass drum.

I could see why a consolette might work in that situation...

Hi Guys,

Yeah, I think you guys are kinda getting the idea of my dilema. The size of the bass drum kinda throws everything off being a 26" monster. I thought about it for the longest time and decided that if Bonham could do it...and with a consolette too.

I think it should be fine.

I'm not even near getting that kit restored yet, wanted to get some feedback and hear what everyone had to say before I dove into this project.

I'll post photos when I eventually get around to it.

Thanks to all who commented. Really appreciate it.

Go for it i am getting ready to do the exact same thing on a natural maple classic 14x26.. I was gonna put a rogers mount on it and use a rogers swivo arm as Bohnam did on his maple set but instead i am going to use a consolette and i am doing it for me.. so i care not what others think after all we do this for our own pleasure right?... I too am gonna use a 14x10 and i also have a 12 x15 but it is to big for the rail i think what do you think?

P.S. when drilling any holes in wood shells find a piece of woodwith the same curve as your drum and hold it uptight to the inside of the shell under where you are going to drill from the outside by holding up tight when you drill through it will not splinter just drill through the shell into the piece of wood you will have a clean round hole..
