Downbeat set for jazz?

Loading...

I've been thinking of switching to a Ludwig Downbeat set for my jazz stuff. I currently have an old Yamaha Maple Custom (not Absolute) with an 18" bass. Thinking of getting rid of it for a Downbeat. Downbeats aren't as easy to find lately it seems. Anyone ever played jazz on a Downbeat?

I'll offer, though it may not be relevant ... I don't play an 18 bass ... never could. It's just too small for me. So, a 20 is the smallest bass I've ever played with any comfort. For jazz, I do play a 20. It works most excellent. It has a great controllable bottom end with room to spare if you need to call it out. I've loved my Ludwig 20s ... but, I also love the sounds of the Slingerland 20s ... you can't beat a Rogers 20 for flat out doing everything right.

No. Never use a Downbeat kit for jazz. Absolutely not.

Like to see pics of the Yamahas. Got a soft spot for 'em.

I believe you could set up any kit for jazz just in how you tune and crank the heads , Buddy Rich used a 24, and alot of the early players had 26's so probably up to the individual..
