Doug Clifford's CCR Camco kit.

Loading...

Having a drink on the balcony...bored, looking thru the million photos in my i-phone...here is a photo of Doug Clifford's CCR Camco kit. Note the Ludwig Supraphone snare. They are at the Musical Instrument Museum in Phoenix, currently closed due to Covid. I was there in 2017.

I met Doug on an airplane in about 2013, Miami to LA. A really nice personable guy. I think he was just happy that I recognized him, and wanted to talk drums with him for a short while.

Regards, MB

So cool. Does that kit have the 18" hi-hats he used? I guess they look big in that picture, but I can't be sure.

Hard to say...they do look bigger than the snare drum, but I really didn't pay attention when I saw the kit, as I didn't know that Doug preferred huge hi-hat cymbals.

Sorry for my lack of attention, MB

He must have had a great roadie. They still look shiny and smooth.

Yeah, I had remembered hearing he used 16" ones, but then recently read an interview with him where he says they were actually 18"! Apparently he had to use special springs in his hi-hat stand to hold them up!

Seem to remember reading somewhere that he went to 18" to compete with the stage volume.

Yeah, there was something like that in the interview. I think Fogerty said he couldn't hear the 14"s when they played live so he just kept going up a size, then eventually just put 2 18" crashes together and that did the trick.

It is interesting that the tom mount on the BD is located far forward (near the front lugs) and the badge is located in the opposite position. Very unusual, so I guess he requested it from the factory. It seems logical that he would have had multiple kits in this finish. The photo below shows the tom mount in the factory position.

Might not be same set in pictures above.

B/W picture has original Camco floor tom legs and color picture looks like Ludwig.

Just an observation.

I remember reading at the Phoenix MIM display that Doug kept knocking over his Camco cymbal stands so the roadies put some circular stage weights over the tripod legs. That kept the stands stable but then he started to break cymbals on a regular basis. Physics and the transfer of energy versus rock and roll, I guess. I am glad they invented drum mics.
