Does Anybody Know What This Brass Shell Rope Drum Is?

Loading...

Literally found in a barn. The shell is 14x10 or so.

Anyone know what it is?

Any chance I could get this playable in a drum set context? If not, any idea how much I could get if I sold it? Thanks!

Possibly a Henry Potter and Co. Drum from the UK or a Pakistani/India knock-off? I'm not sure, but I think that the Potter company would stamp their mark on the shell of the drum. Perhaps someone from the UK etc could verify.

I have essentially the same drum with the fancier "worm" red, white, and blue paint on the hoops. I think this is a common British military design known as a "Guards pattern" and agree that Potter is a good guess at the manufacturer. Mine was made by Premier and is stamped (small letters) above the snare jack adjustment. A lot of them do not have stamps. My brass shell was completely green and I took it to a local band instrument repair company and they added it to a batch of brass horns they were stripping and refinishing (new lacquer). It turned out very nice, looks brand new. They refused to charge me so I bought them a case of beer. Your drum looks to be good quality and they sound great when tuned up. I put some Sonor calf heads mounted on metal flesh hoops and it sounds great for Sousa marches. I think they are worth $300 to $400 in good shape. I happen to think they are worth more as a fine example of a style of rope drums.
