Do you guys talk to your vintage drums when working on them or am I crazy? Last viewed: 8 hours ago

Okay, as long as we're admitting that we talk to our drums, both sweetly and in anger, is anyone willing to admit that they've given their drums names? It's common practice to give a vintage car a name (usually female), but what about drums? The closest I've come to this is referring to my go-to Dynasonic as "The Old Guy" and my Pearl free-floating piccolo as "The New Girl". Anyone else do this?

Oh I used comment and argue with them a lot. They don`t talk back because if they do, I hit them with a stick !i

My wife went up into my drum room, sniffed and asked, "What did you do, take a crap up here?" She then opened all the windows and set out 4 boxes of baking soda. :)

From TheHeadlessHorseman

So I have been working on cleaning and restoring my old Slingerland drums and replacing all the heads. I have found myself inadvertently saying to the drum I was working on, "yea, look how nice and shiny and clean you are now" Later on in the cleaning session I was lifting the drum up to my head, sticking my head inside the drum and smelling the old wood. Am I a nut job or have any of you ever done this?

Yes, HH you are crazy for this..............and larryz and mlayton are too! Huffing album covers, geez!

Actually, I know what you guys mean about the smell of these old drums we love. Are any of you old enough to have owned a new kit in the early to mid 60's? My new 1965 Ludwig kit made my room smell like Pine Sol. Even more so after playing them since the aroma "puffed" out the vent holes.

Ah, the 'good ole days,' before anybody knew anything about out-gassing! The glue, the wrap, and maybe even the lumber were all out-gassing full tilt when those kits were new/recently manufactured.

The 'good news' is; all that out-gassing ended years ago now for vintage kits. Anything they may be putting out after 50 years is negligible. Good observation! It's the 'new car smell' only with drums!

ive got a Ludwig pre serial 12x15 marching snare. I use it on a low snare stand sometimes as a floor tom. I turn the badge towards me because the round knob muffler is above the badge. when I lay into the drum, the resacote smell is pushed out of the venthole towards me. man I love that smell!!

From Purdie Shuffle

I feel bad now because the only time I talk to my drums when I'm working on them, is when they're giving me a hard time! Then, it's just a chain of expletives; 'son-of-a-b**ch, mother-f**ker,' etc.etc. all of which I will not recount here, I'm sure you get the idea. I'll just have to start 'talking nice' to them from now on. It's just that there is always that one lug, one mount, or that one screw that refuses to come off that will send me off on a tirade.I have to remember... talk nice to the drums. Cool DudeJohn

Please talk more nicely to your drum Mr. Purdie. Swearing is what singers and guitarists are for! Excited

I love the smell of vintage Mahogany, Poplar and Maple! Do I talk to them at times? Do I have to admit to it?!!!

And, yes, I still have lots of original 60's and 70's LPs. I get a big thrill every time I take one out and spin it on my restored 1971 Dual 1219 turntable!
