Thanks, Jeff, the spray looks great! I don't know if the glass glitter style I want would spray though, Im looking at the medium grit or even larger. Going for more of the "DW" look than the smaller "classic" glitter look, if that makes any sense. But I have no knowledge of spray equipment at all.

Yes, I used 80 grit and it was not chunky enough. I'd go 40 grit at least...but those sprayed shells of Jeff's do indeed look fine!

Really I'm just talking about silver hex glitter on a putty-coloured backing with a top sheet. Like what Delmar makes actually, only you could offer, say, 3 shades of ginger-ale tint on the top sheet - light/medium/dark....something like that?

I already ordered some actual glass glitter in a small sample jar from Meyer, it looks pretty amazing in their sample pics...we shall see! :p Will keep you guys posted. Alternate plan is to wrap them all in aluminum foil..:D

Instead of aluminum foil, may as well go with muffler tape - already has adhesive...the lines will look cool. :)

Well, not off to a great start. The small sample I tried just isn't looking like I want, a little spotty and lumpy in places. Will take a breath and think about it a bit, but can see it will be a little more difficult to get the desired look. Hats off to you guys that have tried it!

Remind us of your process....it sounds like less at a time is better, when applying the glitter?

Probably so, I ended up using some silver acid free art paper that was very inexpensive from the local art store, coated it with lacquer, and sprinkled the sparkles (I used inexpensive glitter from the art store for this test, I did not use the glass glitter sample as I wanted to see if the rest of the process went ok first) Planned to do the multiple pass lacquer coats as discussed here earlier. I used a shaker bottle that perviously held steak seasoning, and it was pretty effective, but I guess with the lacquer looking so shiny, what I thought looked like adequate glitter coverage later turned out to be rather spotty in places. I haven't totally given up, just re-thinking for when I have more time to do this. Unfortunately, (and I mean that in terms of this project ever getting done!) I have now discovered that the Meyer site also has copper glass glitter...so now I am hungering for and imagining a silver/copper mix that gave us the fabulous "champagne/Bermuda Sand" finish that I would dearly love to have (probably my favorite drum finish ever) but can not afford to purchase in the sheets from Precision or JS! Anyway...rambling post...but that's my state of mind most days anyway! :p

a tip to reduce the spottiness:

I applied clear laquer and springled an overload glitter.

then I hold the paper in vertical position to let the residual glitter fall off.

then i wait for a certain time to allow the laquer to turn stiff (but not hard or dry).

then I took baking paper (that does not stick easily and does not absorb) and layed over the glitter and then rubbed it with the back side of a big spoon ('Yeah, rub it in")

this way the surface is already a little smoothened before you start applying the layers of laquer

Notwithstanding my "less is better" comment above, what Bart did is what I did - over-apply and then shake and in my case scrub off loose glitter. And now I remember concluding at the time that it was the only way to get close to even coverage. Unless you build a machine...

Strongly recommend using putty coloured paper if you stick with silver sparkle out of all the cool choices [see pic]
